The Position

East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) welcomes experienced mechanics to apply for Plant Maintenance Mechanic. EBMUD is seeking mechanics skilled in installing, aligning, maintaining, repairing, and fabricating components for a variety of mechanical equipment such as industrial pumps, hydraulic controls, regulators, valves, piping systems, chemical feed systems, conveyors, and oxygen production and distribution equipment. The current vacancy is in the Water department.

Typical duties may include tasks in the following areas:

*Repairing - Diagnosing, disassembling, and removing damaged parts from equipment; reassembling and testing for normal function

*Installation of Equipment - Preparing for installation; installing equipment, using hand/power tools, welding, cutting, and a variety of rigging equipment

*Machine Operation - Selecting stock, setting up machines, using precision measuring equipment, operating machining equipment, and checking part functionality

*Plumbing and Pipe Work - Troubleshooting problems, determining required materials, isolation of piping, performing plumbing repairs; designing and laying out new piping projects, planning, coordinating, ordering materials, and assembling and performing leakage tests

*Parts Design/Redesign - Analyzing part failure/malfunction, considering alternatives, using precision measuring equipment, and drawing revisions of new parts

*Preventive Maintenance - Performing routine scheduled maintenance tasks related to lubrication, filtering systems, driving components, equipment adjustments; condition monitoring measurements, and performing tests on plant equipment

*Ventilating Equipment - Performing routine maintenance of related equipment, performing minor repairs, and preparing brief reports on equipment condition

The salary range is $10,026 per month increasing to $10,527, $11,053, and $11,606 after 12, 24, and 36 months, respectively.

Requirements

1.A high school diploma or the equivalent; and

2.Attainment of recognized journey-level status as a Maintenance Mechanic, Maintenance Machinist or Millwright with work experience primarily in maintenance repair rather than limited to production machine tool operations; or sixteen months experience comparable to the EBMUD Plant Maintenance Worker III classification including completion of the appropriate courses and advanced on-the-job training as specified in the EBMUD Trades Training Program.

3.Must possess a valid California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record, and the ability to become mobile crane certified by the completion of the probationary period.

4.Must possess the physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the job, including the ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 90 pounds. Must be clean shaven when required to wear respiratory protection equipment, willing to work outside in a variety of weather conditions, around sewage and hazardous process chemicals, and willing to work overtime as needed.

The Selection Process

1.Submit a completed EBMUD application and the required supplemental question responses online at www.ebmud.com by 4:30 p.m., Friday, October 24, 2025. Only application materials submitted online during the filing period will be accepted.

2.Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test part in order to advance to the next step in the selection process.

3.All qualified applications and supplemental responses will be competitively evaluated, with those candidates demonstrating the strongest qualifications for the position to be invited to a technical oral exam panel tentatively scheduled for early-December 2025.

4.Those who pass the technical oral exam will be invited to a performance test (hands-on shop test) tentatively scheduled for mid-December 2025.

5.Those candidates who pass the performance test will be placed on the hiring list, based on rank, for further consideration to fill the current regular vacancy, as well as others occurring over the next 12 to 24 months.

6.The probation period for this position is 12 months. For those holding civil service status the probation period is 6 months.

7.All employment offers are conditional, pending the results of a Live Scan background screening. All selected finalists must participate in the Live Scan background screening process to remain in consideration for EBMUD employment.
