Maryland Department of Transportation

The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) is responsible for building, operating and maintaining a safe and seamless transportation network in Maryland. That network includes the planning, construction and operation of Maryland's highway, transit, maritime and aviation facilities, as well as MDOT Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA). In addition to the five Transportation Business Units (TBUs), MDOT also oversees the Maryland Transportation Authority, which operates the state's seven toll facilities. The MDOT TBU agencies are:
MDOT Maryland Aviation Administration (MDOT MAA) fosters the vitality of aviation statewide and promotes safe and efficient operations, economic viability and environmental stewardship. Responsible for the operation of Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall and Martin State airports, MDOT MAA provides friendly, convenient facilities and customer services and develops enhanced domestic and international passenger and cargo opportunities through intermodalism and state-of-the-art technology.
MDOT MVA touches the life of almost every citizen in our state. Our core mission is to deliver services to our customers in the most efficient manner possible, to ensure the safety of every driver we license and maintaining the integrity and security of our processes for every product issued by MDOT MVA.
From the clothing we wear to the cars we drive, from the magazines we read to the sugar we put in our coffee, it is easy to take for granted the many uses of our great Port. But that is only part of the Port’s story. The Port of Baltimore in recent years has evolved in other ways, including sustaining a reputation for being a true environmental leader, emerging into as secure a port as any in the U.S., and continuing to grow an expanding cruise business.
With dignity and respect, MDOT MTA provides and supports accessible transit networks that are customer focused, safe, appealing, reliable, and efficient throughout Maryland.
MDOT State Highway Administration is responsible for maintaining and operating nearly 17,000 lane miles of roadway and 2,500 bridges; employs more than 3,200 professionals in a variety of disciplines; and is responsible for an annual budget of $1.7 billion.
The Authority provides vital transportation links that move people and promote commerce in Maryland by:
- Creating and maintaining a transportation network of highways, bridges, and tunnels where safety and efficiency are priorities
- Operating and securing our facilities with innovative technologies
- Financing transportation facilities that offer convenient choices to travelers
Under the direction of the Transportation Secretary, the five TBUs work together, wherever possible, to assist each other in the development of a seamless transportation system designed to fuel Maryland's economy and enhance the quality of life of our citizens.
