Job Summary

Under the direction of the Web Development Supervisor, provide advanced user experience design, modern website development, and consulting in support of the business, marketing, and infrastructure needs of UCD Information & Educational Technology (IET) and campus clients. Use independent judgment in execution of responsibilities and a high degree of customer service in gathering user input, creating designs and prototypes, and providing consultation and solutions to UCD stake-owners. This position has broad impact as public and client facing websites are created and/or modified.

Minimum Qualifications

For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license, certification and/or educational degree if required of the position.

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Experience using content management systems, such as Drupal, for building and maintaining complex web sites and applications.
  • Experience conducting UX Research projects, working with stakeholders and customers to gather feedback and scope user experience enhancements in complex projects.
  • Skills to use advanced, modern design tools, frameworks, libraries, and scripts to produce intuitive and attractive user experiences for web sites and applications.
  • Ability to develop web functionality using modern programming languages, practices and patterns, including PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using automated testing systems such as Cypress, PHPUnit, and visual regression testing to ensure web application stability.
  • Experience using other CMS and frameworks, such as Laravel, Symfony, jQuery, and/or WordPress.
  • Experience using a command line interface and shell scripting on Linux.
  • Experience collaborating with clients and coworkers to build requirements and project estimates.
  • Experience working in an environment using established standards, practices, and methodologies, including version control, issue queues, support ticket systems, quality reviews, and project management.
  • Knowledge of current web strategies and trends. Web graphic design, page layout, and UI/UX skills using a variety of tools, including Adobe Creative Suite. Web content strategy and information architecture skills.
  • Familiarity with advanced web design tools and frameworks such as SASS, Gulp, and PatternLab.
  • Skills to create interactive animation and/or 3D web elements using HTML5 Canvas.
  • General knowledge of Linux server operating systems and services such as Apache, MySQL, PHP.
  • Written and verbal communication skills to communicate effectively and clearly with technical and non-technical audiences and work collaboratively with clients and colleagues.
  • Skills in the use, operation, and maintenance of several desktop and server computer systems.
  • Familiarity with several hosting environments for web and database solutions such as virtual private servers (vps), shared, and cloud hosting.
  • Knowledge of common web application vulnerabilities, vectors of attack, and mitigation strategies.

Department Overview

The Enterprise Infrastructure Services (EIS) division within Information and Educational Technology (IET) supports crucial UC Davis technological infrastructure and is committed to enhancing the academic and administrative functions of the institution, ensuring that faculty, staff, and students have the tools and resources needed to succeed in a dynamic and evolving workspace. The Web Development team within EIS is responsible for the development and maintenance of the campus web presence, including the UC Davis Home Site, Content Management System, and Component Pattern Library.

Work Environment

  • Hire MUST be located in-state. (Out of state applicants will be considered but must relocate instate if hired). This position can be done primarily remote with the expectation that the employee must be available to come on site should management deem it necessary for emergencies, meetings, support activities, etc. No reimbursement of travel expenses, travel time not considered work hours.
  • Due to the mission-critical services provided by this department, this position may work hours other than M-F 8-5, especially in response to system problems. Vacation is restricted during peak work periods. Adhere to workplace safety practices, read information communicated about workplace safety, complete required safety training on time, and report any workplace safety issues promptly to their supervisor or the designated safety coordinator.
