Position Description
Manages and directs the day-to-day operations of the rural health epidemiology initiative for the Permian Basin area for Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, School of Medicine based in Odessa, Texas. Plans, coordinates and supervises the operation and activities of the center/institute/department. Develops and implements policies and procedures, administers the budget, organizes tasks and sets priorities.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Perform epidemiologist job duties in the Permian Basin, Texas area (Odessa & Midland).
  • Oversee community/rural engagement unit, including public health improvement interventions, by developing and implementing unit policies and procedures.
  • Conduct community-based participatory research projects utilizing statistical analysis to develop methodologies and procedures for disease prevention, evaluate data, and present findings.
  • Plan and direct projects to investigate and/or promote research in social determinants of health, preventative care and treatments.
  • Communicate findings to various types of health practitioners, administration and other partners.
  • Attend meetings with various department heads and coordinate interdepartmental functions.
  • Oversee community/rural health engagement staff.
  • Teach principals and develop instruction materials for community-based educational programs.
  • Develop relationships with partners in the community to discuss, respond, and enhance community health needs.
  • Coordinate activities to promote those relationships and programs to fill community needs.
  • Develop and maintain record systems to store and process data needed to prepare reports to inform partners of the status of health/preventative care programs.
  • Maintain knowledge of medical advancement, data analysis tools, and healthcare-related technology that would be used to plan and implement projects to advance integrated care in the community.
  • Periodic travel within the Permian Basin, TX area.


Required Qualifications
Master's degree in Public Health or Epidemiology; two (2) years of experience in a public health-related position, including one (1) year of experience working with infection prevention, monitoring and tracing diseases; and multi-agency public health coordination; and a demonstrated knowledge of rural health issues.
