Description
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ability to instruct with sound principles in the area of American Red Cross Water Safety Instruction.
- Ability to speak and communicate before both small and large groups of people with poise and enthusiasm, including but not limited to children, parents, coworkers, and staff.
- Provide individualized development guidelines for swim participants. Create, teach, demonstrate, and implement planned practices suitable for children and adults of all ages and abilities.
- Ability to write class outlines, block plans, and daily lesson plans according to ARC Learn to Swim standards.
- Critique and give feedback to participants regarding their performance level.
- Provide a safe, fun, and enjoyable learning environment for all participants.
- Maintain open communication with the direct supervisor regarding scheduling and coaching.
- Maintain a professional demeanor and attitude with students of all ages, patrons, customers, staff, and upper management.
- Must demonstrate proper time management skills: be on time, be prepared to teach your class, and arrive 15 minutes before the class starts.
- Maintain a consistent schedule; must be able to commit to a full session of swimming lessons.
- Help facilitate equality and fairness among all participants.
- Ensure that any class changes or modifications (i.e. participant transfers) are communicated efficiently to all class participants and to the direct supervisor.
- Assist with setup and clean up before and after lessons.
- Adhere to all Protecting the Mission policies and procedures as established by The Salvation Army.
- Knowledge of safety precautions needed and ability to ensure compliance/adherence by all class members.
- Maintain a safe working environment; report all harmful problems with facilities to the proper supervisor.
- Follow and adhere to all the Salvation Army policies and procedures.
- Report all accidents, incidents, and potential unsafe conditions immediately to the appropriate personnel and/or supervisor.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
General Qualifications and Proficiencies:
- Must be at least 15 years old.
- Must be certified in WSI or have equivalent training/experience.
- Must have 2-3 years of aquatic instruction experience.
- Must attain within 90 days and retain an American Red Cross CPR certification.
- Must be able to read, write, and communicate in English.
- Must have the ability to work and relate well with people.
- Meet all health and safety regulations as defined by the Health Department as well as The Salvation Army.
- Have a philosophy of education that is consistent with that of the Kroc Center and The Salvation Army.
- Maintain a professional attitude and approach to problem-solving.
- Maintain a flexible attitude to fluctuating industry standards and needs of The Salvation Army Kroc Center programs.
- Have the ability to work with children, adults, and other staff in a capacity of leadership and education, including but not limited to:
- Ability to relate joyfully and sensitively to students of all ages.
- Sensitivity to the individual needs of students and the ability to fluctuate teaching techniques to meet their needs.
- Ability to use appropriate positive discipline consistently.
- Ability to handle security and crisis situations calmly.
- Ability to seek supervision and use it consistently.
- Patience with adult and children students.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to demonstrate proficiency with all four competitive strokes; freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly.
- Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis.
- Ability to grasp, push, pull objects, and reach overhead
- Ability to lift and carry 40 lbs.
