Location: Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD-Dermatology

Days-8:00am-12pm

Limited-20 hours per week

Position Summary:




  • Under the supervision of the lead technician and/or Histology Supervisor, prepares tissue samples for microscopic examination by a pathologist.



Minimum Qualifications:

Education:




  • Associates or Bachelor's degree in Allied Health, Biology, or a related field.
  • Must include at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from an accredited college /university, with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both)



Work Experience:




  • A minimum of 1 year related laboratory experience or healthcare setting is required. Without a two or four year college degree, a minimum 2 years' of clinical laboratory work experience is required.
  • Promotion to this level may be achieved through the advancement program for Histo Prep Techs with a combined 1 year of lab experience that includes at least 6 months JHH laboratory, and meeting the education requirement. Employee may have no active discipline.
  • Interpersonal skills (verbal and written); must be able to interact with pathologists, clinicians, histotechs/prep techs, PA's, and other staff related to specimen description and instructions.
  • Manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination; demonstrated ability to use small/sharp instruments, manual and automated equipment for accurate and quality preparation of tissue specimens.
  • Staff should be able to demonstrate work related knowledge of medical terminology within introductory/assessment period.
  • Ability to work independently, efficiently and prioritize work per standard operating procedure
  • Skills to maintain cooperative working relationships within a confined work area.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail.
  • Completes required quality assurance documentation.


    • Maintains tissue processors following established procedures.



    • Embeds and organizes paraffin blocks following established procedures.

Salary Range: Minimum 24.17 per hour - Maximum 39.91 per hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility.

In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount, salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls, before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
