JOB SUMMARY
Perform professional work in support of scientific research using technical knowledge of software, software development, networking, and/or hardware in a complex computing environment. Subject matter expert in multiple areas of computing technology, and specific knowledge of molecular biology and genetics. Work collaboratively with Principal Investigator ("PI") to determine the most suitable computational methods and tools to analyze large-scale biological data sets. Prepare reports for presentation or publication. Responsible for assisting PI in meeting the system needs for multiple research projects and/or labs.
A Computational Biology III position is available in the laboratory of Gary Hon (www.honlab.org) in the Cecil H. and Ida Green Center for Reproductive Biology Sciences at UT Southwestern Medical Center. As part of NIH's Impact of Genomic Variation on Function (IGVF) Consortium, our lab has exciting projects related to understanding how genetic variants contribute to diseases of human development in cardiac, neuronal, and placental systems. This team science initiative by the National Human Genome Research Institute will define modern genomics for the coming decade.
The candidate will play a vital role developing new computational approaches that integrate across multimodal datasets including genome-scale CRISPRi Perturb-Seq screens, saturation Prime Editing screens, and morphological Cell Painting screens. We seek creative and energetic individuals with a keen interest in working on a multidisciplinary team science project at the forefront of modern genomics. Additionally, the candidate will provide high level computational biology and bioinformatic services to Center PI's and researchers for multiple externally funded grants.
The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. and have experience in computational sciences leading to the development of a new computational method and its publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

PhD In a related field of science or technology or
Master's Degree In Computer Science or a related field of biological science or
Bachelor's Degree In Computer Science or a related field of biological science
- Experience
4 years Related research experience in bioinformatics and computational biology with PhD. or
6 years Related research experience in bioinformatics and computational biology with Master's Degree or
8 years Related research experience in bioinformatics and computational biology with Bachelor's degree.
JOB DUTIES
- Collaborate with PI to identify and develop new concepts and programs for data collection and analysis. Use expert knowledge to develop new methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
- Perform, or direct others to perform, complex data analysis related to specialized research methodologies and results.
- Manage assigned research projects with minimal input from PI. Direct projects with undefined time lines and uncertain outcomes, requiring analysis from multiple perspectives.
- Use bioinformatics tools and related laboratory and public databases to support research objectives.
- Oversee development of software to support new and ongoing research projects.
- Oversee resolution of hardware, software, and network issues in support of laboratory objectives.
- Oversee the development and maintenance of complex databases to support new and ongoing research projects.
- Oversee the training of laboratory staff in the use of pertinent research systems.
- Prepare research reports for presentation, and assist with preparation of manuscripts for publication.
- May specialize in bioinformatics, software development, network administration, or hardware/software maintenance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
