Job Summary

As a technical leader in clinical applications, applies advanced professional concepts and extensive industry knowledge to lead and / or work on medium to large projects of broad scope and complexity. This position will be the primary LIS point of contact for: Data Innovations implementation, Epic/ Epic Beaker integration, Blood Bank integration and the Robotic Automation integration. The position performs all duties under the general supervision of the Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) Supervisor and Clinical Laboratory Administrative Director in a manner that denotes the team concept and reflects the UCSF and ZSFG mission, vision and values.

Note: This is a remote position that also requires flexibility for onsite work from time to time.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Clinical Laboratory at ZSFG provides laboratory testing services for inpatients and outpatients at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and other health centers and facilities under the direction of the SF Public Health Department. The Clinical Laboratory has a large 24/7 non-academic staff group (~165) who are covered under 5 different bargaining units and Personnel Policies for Staff Member.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in science, health care information technology, computer science, or related area, and / or equivalent combination of experience / training.
  • Minimum of 6 years of technical experience with various laboratory applications and instrumentation in a hospital or reference laboratory
  • Minimum of 1 year computer build and integration experience of a Laboratory Information System.
  • Broadly encompassing or highly In-depth knowledge of 1-2 areas of focus in clinical applications specialty area(s)..
  • Ability to apply advanced problem-resolution skills to highly complex issues, quickly diagnose problems, and develop, test, and implement appropriate and effective solutions in a timely manner.
  • Advanced interpersonal communication skills to effectively train, support, and collaborate productively with clinical users and key stakeholders at all professional and technical levels.
  • Advanced written and verbal communications skills, to convey highly-technical information and instructions to all levels of clinical users and staff in a specific, clear, and concise manner.
  • Advanced analytical skills and expertise in documentation and reporting, with the ability to apply metrics, plan and implement testing systems, collect and analyze performance data, and produce substantive reports and analyses for management use.
  • Advanced ability to serve as a technical leader and information resource, and to work collaboratively with key personnel and management, providing guidance and recommendations on systems, improvements, upgrades, and industry advances and trends.
  • Knowledge of EPIC integration
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Epic Beaker certification
  • Possession of a clinical laboratory scientist (CLS) license or a similar license (MLT) of equal or higher level issued by the State Department of Health;
  • Master's Degree in appropriate scientific field or MBA
  • Minimum 6 years of Clinical Lab Scientist experience in a hospital laboratory
  • Minimum 1 year Sunquest Build Experience
  • Minimum 1 year Epic Integration Experience
  • Proficient in PC applications including, but not limited to: Microsoft Access, Crystal XI and general database programming.
