Job Profile Summary:

The Business Process Engineering team is responsible for developing and implementing academic business processes optimized to support the growth, service level, and cost performance needs of the individual colleges and functional practices of WGU.This team works very closely with the business analysts in the Education Technology team and the process owners within the Academic Operations teams to drive detailed redesign and re-engineering of current processes and to lead the establishment of brand new, breakthrough processes to ensure WGU's fulfillment of our Student Obsession mission and goals.

The Business Process Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, analyzing, and implementing institutional business processes that are optimized to support the growth, service level, and cost performance needs of the individual schools and functional shared services of the university.

The BPE's primary focus is to enhance efficiency, streamline workflows, and ensure the alignment of upstream and downstream business processes with the institution's strategic goals holistically. The BPE works to identify critical areas for process improvement, propose people/process/technology solutions, and drive continuous improvement initiatives across the university. They will work closely with Project/Program/Portfolio Managers, Finance, Institutional Analytics & Research (IAR), Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) or Process Owners within the identified business domain(s) and Product Managers, Systems Engineers, Enterprise Architects on the EdTech team to drive detailed redesign as well as re-engineering of current state processes, and to lead the establishment of brand new, breakthrough future state processes to ensure the university's fulfillment of our student obsession mission and key results.

The BPE will be directly involved in the largest and most important strategic transformation projects.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes and documents business processes to identify inefficiencies, bottlenecks, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Suggests and implements small-scale process improvements based on data-driven insights and stakeholder feedback.
  • Gathers data from various stakeholders, systems, and processes to understand current & target workflows.
  • Helps develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs), best practices, templates and guidelines for use both within and beyond the BPE Team.
  • Works with cross-functional teams to implement process changes and ensure smooth execution of improvements.
  • Offers inputs and ideas to construct the end-to-end business process architecture, framework and relationships.
  • Focuses on the fundamentals of Lean from a tactical perspective.
  • Maintains responsibility for being the Lean and Six Sigma tools and methodologies expert on project teams and process redesign teams.
  • Performs detailed process analysis using Lean and Six Sigma tools to drive the design and implementation of optimized business processes for academic operations practices, functions, and colleges.
  • Coaches, trains, and assists other team members and other university employees in the skillful use of process optimization methodologies and Lean/Six Sigma tools.
  • Uses Project Management methodologies to plan workflows and work assignments to ensure the on-time completion of process design and redesign projects.
  • Creates and maintains a detailed business process architecture mapping of the Practice's process.
  • Develops measurement plans with high level and low level KPI's to identify efficiencies and prevent waste in the organization.
  • Directs day-to-day process improvement work teams and project teams in the use of process optimization tools and data to ensure the best use of the team members' time. This includes leading, mentoring, demonstrating, and executing the actual tools and methodologies as needed to ensure on-time success of the team.
  • Designs and implements operational and data-driven decision support systems to establish and maintain a culture of execution and continuous process improvement (CPI).
  • Supports process and cultural transformation by guiding stakeholders through change management efforts.
  • Constructs and communicates project status reports at all levels in the organization.
  • Collaborates with other professionals both inside and outside of the university to promote a positive, student-obsessed atmosphere.
  • Responds with urgency to organization needs and exhibits excellent judgment to deliver results.
  • Works to model capacity, service levels, outcomes, and cost over time in conjunction with Finance to predict and prevent supply and demand imbalances leading to sub-optimized process performance.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities

  • Basic understanding of process improvement frameworks such as Lean, Six Sigma and Business Process Management (BPM).
  • Familiarity with tools like Microsoft Visio, Lucidchart, or similar software for process mapping and documentation.
  • Knowledge of basic data analysis techniques to assess current state processes and identify inefficiencies.
  • Ability to create process flowcharts, swimlane diagrams, and other visual representations of business processes.
  • Ability to communicate process changes clearly with stakeholders at the operational level, including preparing documentation and reports.
  • Ability to work within a team, often collaborating with other departments and stakeholders to gather information or implement changes.
  • Awareness of basic project management principles (e.g., scope, schedule, resources, cost etc.)
  • Knowledge of Lean and Six Sigma tools and concepts.
  • Solid understanding of quality improvement methodologies.
  • Working knowledge/proficiency in Project Management Processes and Principles.
  • Fundamental understanding of Business Process Architecture Mapping.

Job Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 1 year of experience in Business Process Optimization using Lean Six Sigma methodologies

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree
  • Yellow Belt, or Green Belt certification
  • Lean Bronze certification
  • Experience in data analytics
  • Experience in business process architecture mapping

The salary range for this position takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs.

At WGU, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their position, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is:

Pay Range: $80,300.00 - $120,400.00
