Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The NC NTSP Instructional Coach affiliated with the Watson College of Education at the University of North Carolina Wilmington will manage a cohort of teachers assigned in one or more schools and/or school districts in the southeast region and will be assigned to these locations as needed.
2024-2025 support need resides in Onslow County and D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy, a UNCW laboratory school in New Hanover County.

The Instructional Coach will work with beginning teachers to establish ambitious and inspiring vision and goals, plan purposefully, and engage in data-based problem solving to increase student achievement. Instructional Coaches will also play an integral role in developing the broader support program, working closely with NC NTSP staff, school and district leadership, UNC system Schools of Education, and others to ensure that the web of support is effective for new teachers.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership, or a related field
  • Five years of teaching experience leading diverse groups of students to achieve ambitious outcomes
  • A strong record of measurable results as a classroom teacher
  • A strong record of previous coaching and/or mentoring experience and leading adult professional development (e.g. as a workshop facilitator, mentor teacher, etc.)
  • Strong written and oral communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of North Carolina's educational systems, including a full understanding of PreK-12 education, and the role of NC's institutions of higher education in teacher preparation
  • Passion for teaching and for education and a belief that this program, the Instructional Coaches, the beginning teachers, and the students will be highly successful

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Demonstrated leadership while working in a public school/and or higher education setting
  • Experience and direct knowledge of edTPA rubrics and effective models of teacher preparation from pre-service through induction
  • Understanding of research, assessment, and evaluation strategies for educational programs
  • Demonstrated talent and innovation as a classroom teacher, instructional coach, beginning teacher mentor and/or school/district leader
  • Strong people and leadership skills
  • Knowledge of pedagogy and adult learning theory; knowledge of federal and state education policies
  • Demonstrated organizational and data management skills

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The NC New Teacher Support Program (NC NTSP) seeks to improve the knowledge and ability of beginning teachers by developing and executing intensive beginning teacher institutes, instructional coaching and support services, and professional development for beginning teachers. Under the direction of the UNC General Administration and in collaboration with institutions of higher education and Local Education Agencies, the NC New Teacher Support Program provides research-based induction services delivered by master teachers and instructional coaches during a beginning teacher's first, second, and third years of their career and manages and develops new teachers to envision and achieve results that ensure short and long term success of their students.
