Associate or Full Professor: The Texas Chair in German Studies (Eighteenth Century through the Present)

The Department of Germanic Studies at The University of Texas at Austin seeks applications for a tenured Associate Professor or tenured Full Professor for appointment as the Texas Chair in German Studies, to begin Fall of academic year 2025-26. Field of research is open, but must include at least two areas of Germanophone literature and culture in any period(s) from the eighteenth century to the present. The ideal chairholder will bring dynamic, innovative, and transdisciplinary approaches to scholarship and teaching. Duties will include service to the Department, the College of Liberal Arts, and the University in addition to research and teaching (both undergraduate and graduate).

The department envisions the holder of the Texas Chair in German Studies bringing enhanced transnational perspectives to a department that has begun charting new directions for studies of Germanic-language cultures (Germany, Austria, Scandinavia, the Netherlands, etc., plus Yiddish), including their interconnections, their material and media networks on regional and global scales, and the broad range of languages and signifying practices in which they participate. Expectations include incubating projects with national and international participation and impact (grants, conferences, exchanges, etc.), especially those that augment the scope of the program's research and that build bridges to other campus units. In addition to undergraduate and graduate teaching, and research, duties will include service to the Department, the College of Liberal Arts, and the University.

The UT campus offers diverse opportunities to connect Germanic studies to larger contexts in Europe, the Americas, and beyond (e.g. migration studies; European Studies; transnational studies within and outside of Germanophone regions), including specialized units dedicated to comparative literature studies, cultural contact studies, gender and sexuality studies; specialized social science projects (e.g., security studies, marginalization, postcolonial, and area studies), mediality, museum studies, art history, and memory studies, as well as history of ideas, technology, and science. The department values faculty-graduate student collaboration and close ties across campus with strong units in the humanities, arts, and social sciences.

Qualifications

Applicants must hold a Ph.D., possess native or near-native abilities in both German and English, and demonstrate well-developed and substantial research records and evolving research programs. Preferred qualifications include a track record of successful student supervision, mentorship, and teaching/curricular development; effective program management skills; and connections with national/international research entities or projects.
