The basics of this position:

Serves students in the TRIO Student Support Services program, a federally funded grant designed to support first-generation, limited income, and students with documented disabilities in reaching their academic goals. TRIO Advisors provide comprehensive and proactive advising, educational guidance, career and transfer planning services and assistance with applying for federal financial aid and scholarships. Additionally, TRIO Advisors plan and implement cultural enrichment activities, college tours, workshops, and other programming that increases student retention, graduation and success.

What you'll do:



  • Assists students with post-secondary course selection, academic planning, financial aid counseling, career exploration, transfer advising, and financial literacy.
  • Helps students develop an educational plan by clarifying educational and career goals, selecting a program of study, and guiding decision-making.
  • Reviews degree evaluations, transfer credits, placement test results, and other relevant information to create educational plans that meet program requirements.
  • Provides proactive advising, case management, and mid-semester academic reviews, monitoring students' academic progress and establishing positive rapport.
  • Advises students on transfer plans, including identifying appropriate courses and preparing for successful transfer.
  • Supports students in career exploration, including career assessments, interpretation of results, and aligning career choices with academic programs.
  • Assists with TRIO recruitment efforts, including orientations, creating Academic Success Plans, and conducting presentations.
  • Guides students in applying for federal financial aid (FAFSA), scholarships, and other financial resources.
  • May train and supervise student workers, serve on advising and retention-related committees, and prepare reports as needed.
  • Develops and implements programs to improve retention, persistence, and graduation rates.
  • Refers students to relevant resources such as TRIO Peer Mentors, Academic Coaches, or other on-campus/community services.
  • Plans and facilitates workshops on personal, academic, and career development, as well as cultural enrichment activities and college tours.
  • Maintains TRIO student files, tracks contacts, and monitors student records.
  • Contributes to achieving TRIO Student Support Services grant goals and objectives.
  • Builds cooperative relationships with students, STLCC staff, faculty, and transfer institutions.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


Education, experience, and other requirements:

Bachelor's degree in relevant field. Two years' experience preferred in advising, counseling, coaching, case management, training, and development.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Master's degree in education, counseling or related field is preferred
* Experience with retention, program development and student success initiatives
* Experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting students served by the project
* Previous experience working for TRIO Student Support Services or other TRIO programs
