POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Shift Supervisor

LOCATION/DEPT: Evangeline Booth Lodge

REPORTS TO: Social Services Manager

FLSA CATEGORY: Non-Exempt

STATUS TYPE: RFT

DEPARTMENT MISSION

To support the full mission of The Salvation Army by providing compassionate, professional service to the families residing at the Lodge and the community in a team-focused manner with the entire Lodge staff.

OUTCOMES

Shift Supervisors monitor and ensure ongoing facilities operation and provide program oversight and compliance with agency/lodge rules and regulations governing guests, visitors, and service providers. Provide direct supervision to shift monitors specific to that shift. Scope of responsibility includes, but is not limited to handling facility and program operations/emergencies, performing statistical data gathering and reporting, facilitating incident and grievance reporting, and monitoring maintenance of building and grounds.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



  1. Program/Administrative Duties

    1. Maintain program statistics, review data provided by social service staff and submit reports in a timely fashion.
    2. Participate in hiring decisions, evaluate staff performance, and make recommendations to the Social Services Manager as needed.
    3. Develop shift schedules to ensure 24-hour front desk coverage (facilitate shift coverage for planned or unplanned absences).
    4. Handle emergencies and unusual incident reporting to include verbal instructions and follow-up, written reports, and interface with emergency community service providers (i.e., police, fire, disaster). Initiating appropriate reporting to Program Administrators and case management staff of emergencies and unusual incidents. Providing support and assistance to Shift Monitors in handling emergencies and unusual incident reports.
    5. Provide assistance in administering drug testing.
    6. Maintain confidentiality of guest information (verbal/written).
    7. Attend agency/staff meetings, supervisory conferences, individual supervisory meetings as scheduled and/or required. Schedule and conduct shift change meetings. Make recommendations for staff training. Demonstrate flexibility and availability to staff and supervisors as needed to address program/guest issues (to include problem-solving, conflict resolution and crisis intervention).


  2. Supervision

    1. Supervise Shift Monitors during the assigned shift.
    2. Provide direction and leadership to Shift Monitors to affect appropriate adherence to agency/program guidelines and procedures.
    3. Oversee all aspects of Shift Monitor duties and monitor completion of tasks, uniformity in procedural administration, and promote effective communication between self, Shift Monitors, Program Administrators, and guests.
    4. Monitor and protect physical safety of residents, agency personnel, and visitors to and from the site. Conduct routine patrol of facility and grounds.


  3. Client Interaction

    1. Provide entry/exit oversight of guests to include intake and discharge activities.
    2. Monitor daily guest activities as it pertains to lodging, exit and entry of facility, building and grounds, and community access.
    3. Oversee and/or perform safety checks of guests' baggage and/or guest rooms as necessary to prevent the concealment and storage of alcohol, drugs, weapons, and/or hazardous materials (i.e., combustible/fire agents, smoking materials or other) as necessary or upon request by case management and/or administrator(s).
    4. Direct guests to address any/all social service issues to their assigned Case Manager (Social Service Manager during absences). This includes issues pertaining to family, self, mental health/emotional, financial, substance abuse, parenting, and/or physical health).
    5. Promote the supervision of minor children at all times during guest placement. May provide verbal prompting to parents (in cases of non-compliance). Document and report non-compliance of parental supervision to case management staff and/or Administrator(s).


  4. Other Duties

    1. Provides assistance in coordinating efforts of all departments where warranted or assigned.
    2. Ensure and/or conduct fire drills and document attendance and outcome.
    3. Inform Administrators of any suspected and/or known fire/disaster hazards, as well as, malfunctions in fire alarm system.
    4. Report Shift Supervisor and Shift Monitor absences to Social Services Manager 24 hours prior to scheduled shift.
    5. On call availability.
    6. All other duties as assigned.




REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

This position reports to the Social Services Manager.

This position supervises the Shift Monitors assigned to the shift.

In contacts related to this position's duties, this individual acts as a representative of the Salvation Army and its mission.

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS

This individual will be evaluated on how effectively the outcomes of this position are achieved, as well as the timeliness, accuracy, and completeness of accomplishing assigned goals.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE



  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree. Major in sociology, social work, psychology, human services, or other related discipline.
  • Two years providing direct social services or child welfare services within a not-for-profit setting. One year of supervisory experience, preferred. Familiarity and/or experience working with diverse, low-income groups desired.


COMPENTENCIES



  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to interface with bi-lingual populations (where warranted).
  • Prior supervisory experience and ability to multi-task.
  • Professional and appropriate interpersonal skills (agency/community).
  • Willingness and aptitude to learn the concepts involved with serving homeless to low-income families.
  • Ability to produce electronic, statistical and/or written reports. Knowledge of basic to advanced computer software (user interface) and basic math concepts.
  • A positive attitude and the ability to be flexible in light of changing job situations/priorities.
  • A commitment to uphold and promote the mission of The Salvation Army and an appreciation of faith-based service organizations.
  • An ability to work with confidential material.


POSITION LIMITATIONS



  • This individual will only commit Army resources that have been allocated or approved.
  • This individual will keep the Social Services Manager informed on all critical issues relating to his/her area of responsibility.
  • This individual will adhere to all Army policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of this position.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT



  • This position is required to do light to moderate physical work.
  • In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to use standard office equipment, and a PC.
  • The work environment for this position is a residential environment with a low to moderate noise level.
  • Must be able to work with clients that have poor social skills, suffer from mental illness, and have substance abuse problems.
