The Governance Manager develops, trains, and assesses the M-IQ, Manufacturing Intelligence lean transformation process. Working with the Governance team the Governance Manager owns the research, development, training, implementation and sustainability of program tools and tenets. The Governance Manager must be able to effectively tailor communications and training to all levels of the organization and be confident in coaching management in tactical execution of strategic plans. Also, responsibilities include systematic review of all M-IQ locations for opportunities, completion of data collection and analysis, and support of special projects. All activities support improvement of Smithfield's manufacturing improvement plan.

The Governance team provides the framework, systems, and methods by which the M-IQ program is defined, conducted, and monitored. They document program elements, train the trainers to exponentially grow lean knowledge, and oversee the implementation and sustainability of each element. Governance works with the Continuous Improvement team members, Plant Operations, On the Job Training, Engineering, Food Safety and Quality, and beyond in support of Smithfield's Operational Excellence goals.

Core Responsibilities

  • Analyzes M-IQ program for systemic opportunities to drive results and develops future content to meet business needs.

  • Guides cross functional teams to implement the Smithfield Way tenets and tools, possibly at multiple locations simultaneously, ensuring deployment meets standard, and then completes process confirmations and/or maturity assessments to ensure it is sustained to meet the program governance.

  • Completes data collection and conducts root cause analysis, creates Value Stream Maps, and troubleshoots manufacturing, business and operational issues.

  • Develops and facilitates standardized trainings and workshops to be utilized at all M-IQ locations to drive cultural change and improve core company metrics as defined by leadership. Development of training requires researching and documenting all aspects of Lean tools and determining the Smithfield Way of implementing and utilizing each tool in a sustainable way across all manufacturing locations. Responsible for assisting in creating the entire package around the tool from pre-work, schedule, plant training, hands on activities, validation of effective use, train the trainer, and more.

  • Develops and conducts compliance audits, program evaluations, and reviews to drive results with the fortitude to ensure change is sustainable at all Smithfield manufacturing locations and summarizes results to help determine Continuous Improvement department resource needs.

  • Uses high level of judgement to make decisions and handle complex tasks or problems within all areas of the business. Has the ability to assess quality of information given and ask pertinent questions to stakeholders. Able to offer new solutions to problems outside of set parameters and can construct and provide recommendations. Uses multiple internal and some external sources outside of own function to help arrive at a decision.

  • Establish and develop systems which reinforce and encourage data-based decisions to drive value stream enhancement and continuous improvement.Works across the organization to ensure consistent approach, format, data integrity, and decision processes are deployed and in use throughout the facility.

  • Acts as a change agent to identify and drive continuous improvement methodologies into the M-IQ platform and Continuous Improvement department to drive cost savings for the organization.

  • Will provide weekly reports for individual contribution as well as reporting for department and program elements as needed.

  • Provides training and guidance to Smithfield support services departments on the M-IQ Platform including senior department leadership and Manufacturing Leadership Team.

  • Lead, coach, and mentor multiple improvement teams to affect rapid change.

  • Independently completes special projects including but not limited to pioneering adoption of new technologies, becoming a subject matter expert on new or trial software, and supporting cross functional initiatives.

  • Supports company manufacturing improvement plan through driving advancement of the problem solving A3 process, increasing the ability to make data-based actions throughout the organization, and continuing to provide new lean tool education.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Engineering, Science or related field and 5+ years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, required.

  • 2+ years of demonstrated experience in team management/development or project leadership is required

  • Demonstrated understanding of Advanced Continuous Improvement and lean manufacturing principles with 2+ years within a continuous improvement role, preferred.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including advanced level knowledge of Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Strong ability to learn new programs and technical skills as necessary.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, organizational planning, teamwork, analytical reasoning, and adaptability.

  • Strategic thinking skills, and the ability to effectively translate strategy into operating methodology and results.

  • Demonstrated technical writing skills including creation of training material or reference material.

  • Demonstrated ability to train in person and via Teams effectively.

  • Demonstrated planning, organization, and execution skills. Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple deadlines. Solid analytical skills, with practical operational knowledge. Strong business acumen.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify and implement continuous improvement plans, lean manufacturing initiatives, 5S, value stream mapping, statistical process control to drive change.

  • Strong attention to detail, self-motivation, innovation, and ability to operate autonomously.

  • Demonstrated ability to transfer Continuous Improvement knowledge to less experienced CI Specialists as well as plant operations personnel, both hourly and salary

  • Demonstrated ability in developing high performing hourly teams and coaching salary personnel in mentoring and developing high performing work teams.

  • Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.

  • Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.

  • Must be able to travel up to 50% of the time.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise/Mentor associates, team members, CFP associates, interns, plant leadership team members as assigned.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Must be comfortable working in a production setting.

  • The plant environment will include wet or humid conditions (non-weather related), extreme cold and heat (non-weather related), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, and chemicals.

  • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
