Job Summary:



This is a clinical research laboratory position at the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes. The primary responsibilities are to process biological samples collected during clinical research visits, properly store, and document these samples, keep sample databases updated and maintain integrity of samples during transfers, aliquoting and shipping procedures.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functions: attends and contributes to study-related meetings, conferences, symposiums, etc which include personnel at multiple levels.
  • Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects: conducts study participant specimen processing, any protocol specific specialized techniques, storage and shipping.
  • Perform experiments and tabulate and analyze research
  • Support analytical testing process using standard lab support knowledge in the collection and review of conditions, including preserving samples, completing sample preparation, documenting and communicating results conducts specimen processing, storing, shipping for multiple studies; conduct updates to study databases as required; conducts, documents and communicates point-of-care test results to clinical staff via clinic visit data entry or other confidential processes.
  • Perform pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical test process and evaluate results produced: as a lab user in a CAP/CLIA laboratory, contributes to all aspects of metabolic tests conducted in the lab (HbA1c, plasma glucose by HemoCue 201 and Contour NextOne glucometer).
  • Prepare lab for daily operations, including stocking materials, lab supplies inventory, equipment, safety, cleanliness, and related areas: includes running standard controls on testing instruments and freezer temperature documentation.
  • Pick up, transport, and maintain results, samples, documents, materials and other items as needed: per study-specific protocols.
  • Dispose of laboratory materials and samples using well established guidelines and instructions: per study-specific protocols, university EHS, and/or CAP/CLIA regulations.
  • Review, complete and process logs, documents, databases, and related materials and information: reviews and completes all log entries for each instrument used for tests study participant testing; maintains all freezer temperature logs and documents the transfer of stored samples.
  • Provide support researching issues and developing recommendations to resolve process, unit and related issues: coordinates with study coordinator, manager and database management to resolve and troubleshoot program screening-related issues.
  • Assist in the review and implementation of lab support policies, practices and programs to meet organizational, operations and management needs: reviews SOP's developed by the lab manager and provides input for implementation.
  • Assist with ensuring compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations; receive guidance and direction or escalate when required: reports to Lab manager with questions or concerns.


Additional responsibilities at the Senior Level:



  • Independently and creatively identify laboratory solutions: evaluates clinic visit lab processing needs and coordinates with other lab staff to determine who and when to process program screening samples, to ensure timely completion each week.
  • Independently Review, develop and implement new or modified laboratory techniques required for research projects: may include proposing more efficient methods or ideas for increased reproducibility of integrity of final product, across all lab staff conducting sample processing.
  • Assist Team Leads, Supervisors and/or management with creation and implementation of processes and procedures and quality improvement initiatives: works closely with study coordinator to develop a streamline system for requesting, tracking and completing long distance protocol sample collections.
  • Assist and train junior team members: assists with training of all sample processing protocols, sample pull projects, as well as sample shipping and other lab-related tasks..


Additional Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Independently completes all lab supply and equipment ordering and ensures compliance with the Procurement Department by completing the required expense reports.
  • Assists and supports the Prevention Team dual study visits.



Work Location:



Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, Colorado.

Qualifications:



Minimum Qualifications:

Intermediate Rank:



  • Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field
  • One (1) year professional level research experience


Senior Rank:



  • Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field
  • At least two (2) years professional level research experience


Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications:



  • Master's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field
  • Two (2) years of experience in an experimental or wet laboratory

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as:

Intermediate: $48,970 - $62,290

Senior: $52,941 - $67,341

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
