Northwestern Pritzker School of Law invites applications for Visiting Assistant Professor (VAP) positions with an expected start date in advance of the 2025-26 academic year.

The VAP program at Northwestern Pritzker School of Law is designed to provide law school graduates who are planning to embark on an academic career with the opportunity to fully participate in our scholarly community. Those participating in the VAP program will receive targeted mentorship, opportunities to present research, and academic placement support. The number of available positions will vary annually, and appointments will typically be for one year with the opportunity for reappointment for one additional year. VAPs will have access to the extensive teaching support resources of Northwestern University and will be expected to teach a substantive course, to be determined in consultation with the Associate Dean in charge of curriculum, in each year of the appointment. The positions are full-time, benefits eligible, and offer a competitive annual salary and research support funding.

Northwestern seeks applications from graduates of any law school and any year of graduation. We encourage applications from those with experience practicing law and/or recipients of a Ph.D. in any field with sustained scholarly interest in law. Northwestern welcomes applications from candidates who would contribute to the diversity of our faculty and community. VAP applications will be assessed based on a candidate's potential to pursue a tenure-track position at a top law school after completing the program.

Candidates should apply directly through our online application system: Apply for Job. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and the search will remain open until the position is filled. Required application materials include: a curriculum vitae, a research agenda, a law school transcript, a list of at least three academic references, and a representative scholarly writing sample. Specific inquiries should be addressed to Professor of Law Paul Gowder (paul.gowder@law.northwestern.edu), and to Director of Faculty Affairs, Elizabeth Fritz, (elizabeth.fritz@law.northwestern.edu).

The expected base pay range for this position is $65,000 - $75,000.

This base pay range is for a twelve-month academic appointment and is subject to negotiation. Northwestern University has provided a pay range representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for the position. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate including years since terminal degree, training, and field or discipline; departmental budget availability; internal equity; and external market pay for comparable jobs.
