Associate Dean of Faculty

The Northwestern University Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music invites applications for the newly created position of Associate Dean of Faculty.

The Bienen School of Music offers highly selective, conservatory-level training within a top-ranked research university and features a dedicated faculty, unparalleled facilities, and proximity to the vibrant music community of Chicago.

Description

The Associate Dean of Faculty will report to the dean of the Bienen School of Music and will work in partnership with the administration, faculty, and staff to assist with and oversee various faculty processes as outlined below. In addition, the Associate Dean of Faculty will hold a tenured academic appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor and will complement or augment the current Bienen School faculty with a practice rooted in one or more of the school's areas of specialization. Candidates with expertise in interdisciplinary fields of performance and/or research, either within an established area of the Bienen School or within Northwestern, are especially encouraged to apply. The Associate Dean of Faculty will serve a five-year term, which is renewable. It is expected that the Associate Dean of Faculty will also teach in the Bienen School of Music.

Duties and Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Associate Dean of Faculty may include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing broad support for faculty affairs, including faculty development, curricular development, interdisciplinary initiatives, academic program review, new faculty onboarding, and various faculty governance needs
  • Managing faculty personnel issues, including providing guidance and direction to department chairs and program coordinators
  • Supporting faculty research proposals and initiatives
  • Ensuring curricular alignment with the goals and mission of the Bienen School and the University
  • Working with the Provost's Office on accreditation and assessment needs
  • Managing annual faculty conflicts of interest and activity reporting processes
  • Overseeing faculty search processes, as well as promotion and tenure processes
  • Serving on University and School committees, as needed
  • Teaching at least one to two courses during the academic year
  • Maintaining engagement in scholarly and/or creative activities
  • Other duties as assigned by the dean

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in music or a related field
  • Minimum of seven years of college-level teaching and/or administrative activities
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills
  • Ability to work effectively and respectfully with a broad range of individuals representing a variety of perspectives, abilities, and areas of expertise

Preferred Qualifications

Ideal candidates will possess a terminal degree (DMA or PhD).

Salary

The expected base pay based on rank is as follows:

Associate Professor: $85,000 - $125,000

Professor: $110,000 - $150,000

Additionally, the Associate Dean of Faculty will receive additional compensation of 2/9ths of their academic base salary each year they serve in the position.

Northwestern University has provided a pay range representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for the position. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate; years since terminal degree, training, and field or discipline; departmental budget availability; internal equity; and external market pay for comparable jobs.

Discretionary funds

The candidate of choice will receive discretionary creative/research funds during each year of their appointment for five years.
