Salary/Grade: NEX/14

Target hiring range for this position will be between be $56,376 to $61,867 per year; $27.00- $29.63 per hour. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.

Job Summary:

This position performs high complexity clinical lab procedures in support of the NMH and LCH transplant centers. The procedures are molecular based tissue typing, flow cytometric and solid phase antibody testing and crossmatch, and immunoassays.

Follows appropriate protocols, policies, regulations, Good Clinical and Good Laboratory Practices.

This position will require some on-call and overtime.

Specific Responsibilities:

Technical

  • Performs, analyzes, and interprets clinical histocompatibility tests. Completes all aspects of the HLA histocompatibility procedures performed in the CLIA and ASHI certified Transplant Immunology Laboratory. All tests are used to help determine compatibility of donor and recipient pairs.
  • Maintains and ensures quality of laboratory instrumentation and reagents.
  • Manages clinical lab data and generate reports.
  • Completes daily general lab maintenance.
  • May manage one or more phase(s) of a major project(s) or all activities of a small project.
  • Performs statistical tests.
  • Demonstrates good judgment, conscientiousness, precision and accuracy when performing assigned testing
  • Laboratory performance demonstrating good judgment, conscientiousness, precision and accuracy. A fully functioning level of understanding in many of the stated skills below is required.

Cellular Biology:

  • Cell culture, cell isolation

Immunology:

  • Flow cytometry

Histology:

  • Microscopy

Administrative

  • Maintains detailed records of results which may include collecting, extracting and entering data.
  • Interprets and/or presents results
  • Prepares charts and graphs for presentations and publications.
  • Reviews results and revises protocols as necessary to ensure that testing objectives are attained.
  • Participates in continuing educational activities.
  • Based on level of experience and credentials, may participate in competency evaluation of other medical technologists

Finance

  • Tracks & summarizes lab supply expenses.
  • Verifies accuracy of invoices.
  • Orders &/or maintains inventory of reagents, &/or lab supplies.
  • Identifies low inventory ordering needs and is proactive in addressing them.
  • Follow ups with vendors to ensure inventory will not be compromised due to backorders/shipment issues

Supervises

  • Trains students, other technologists or staff in high complexity assays and high level clinical testing analysis.
  • Completes other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications: (Education, experience, and any other certifications or clearances)

  • Successful completion of a full 4-year courses of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in science; or related; OR appropriate combination of education and experience
  • One year previous experience with standard clinical laboratory operating procedures or related is required.

Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)

  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must have the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be able to work under stress due to the complexity and urgency of the testing requests.
  • Must possess a good eye for detail, manual dexterity and must have the ability to maintain focus and mental concentration, due to the complexity of the work and risks stemming from an incorrect result.

Preferred Qualifications: (Education and experience)

  • Experience with standard clinical laboratory operating procedures.
  • Experience in training new technologists.
  • American College of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ACHI) Histocompatibility technologist (CHT) or specialist (CHS) certification.
  • Experience in data analysis and reporting.
