Position description

Kinman Lab - Junior/Assistant Specialist

Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics

UC San Francisco

The Kinman lab is hiring a junior or assistant specialist to contribute to their work on understanding the structural basis of cellular decision making. In particular, the specialist would work on applying structural approaches, including cryo- electron microscopy and cryo- electron tomography, to understand how cells integrate diverse environmental signals to regulate autophagic initiation. The goal is for this specialist to lead an independent project that will produce a first-author publication. More information about the Kinman lab can be found at https://kinmanlab.ucsf.edu.

Responsibilities include:



  • Developing and leading an independent project
  • Staying up-to-date with relevant scientific literature
  • Active participation in regular individual and group meetings
  • Communicating research findings by presenting to the group and writing papers
  • Training other members of the lab in skills or techniques, as needed
  • Documenting experiments in a laboratory notebook, and maintaining raw data and data analysis records
  • Contributing to lab upkeep by ordering reagents and organizing instrument maintenance
  • Adhering to laboratory safety policies and guidelines


Required Qualifications:



  • Individuals appointed at the Junior rank must possess a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent) or at least four years of research experience
  • Individuals appointed at the Assistant rank must possess a master's degree (or equivalent) or a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent) with three or more years of research experience
  • Previous laboratory research experience, either during undergraduate studies or post-baccalaureate employment
  • Attention to detail and the ability to follow complex protocols
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills, and enthusiasm to work as part of a team
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills



Preferred Qualifications:



  • Prior molecular biology experience (for example, designing and cloning DNA constructs)
  • Prior structural biology and biochemistry experience
  • Prior experience with Python programming
  • Background in cellular and molecular biology, biochemistry, structural biology, biophysics, or computational biology
  • At least two years of previous laboratory research experience, either during undergraduate studies or post-baccalaureate employment


See Table 24B for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $53,100-$68,300.
