Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applicants for an Inpatient Veterinary Assistant to work in the Intermediate Care ( IMC), Intensive Care Unit ( ICU), and Emergency Room (ER) section of our Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital. The individual in this position will work directly with board-certified emergency and critical care veterinarians and rotating intern doctors to help facilitate quality care and patient flow through the IMC, ICU, and ER.

This is a monthly rotating swing shift position.
Mon - Thurs 4:00 pm - 2:00 am; Fri - Sun 1:00 pm - 2:00 am

Essential Functions

  • Assists with administering treatments and monitoring patients admitted in IMC or ICU, Observes and records vital data, abnormal signs, body weight, food/water intake of animals, and collects and labels specimens and perform treatments and administer medications as prescribed by primary veterinarian.
  • Performs and demonstrates veterinary care techniques and procedures related to emergency and critical care medicine.
  • Assists veterinarians in the care of patients requiring advanced procedures and life-saving techniques including CPR, mechanical ventilation and dialysis.
  • Inspects facilities, equipment, and supplies daily, as well as observes health status of animals, environmental conditions, temperature, and sanitation.
  • Perform job duties with speed and accuracy and work as essential personnel, providing care for patients after hours, on weekends and holidays.
  • Assists with emergency triage and stabilization of patients presenting through the Emergency service.
  • May be responsible for, or assist in, billing clients, inputting charges, and/or similar tasks.

Minimum Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications
Depending upon a combination of education and experience, the finalist selected for this position will be hired as a Veterinary Assistant - Inpatient and assigned levels II or III.

Level II: Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus 2 years of experience working in a veterinary hospital environment.

Level III: Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus 4 years of experience working in a veterinary hospital environment.

Substitutions allowed for Education:
Indicated education is required; no substitutions allowed.

Substitutions allowed for Experience:
When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.
