Job Description Summary
The Department of Theatre and Dance at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama, invites applications for a 9-month, full-time tenure track Assistant or Associate Professor of Scenic and Lighting Design beginning August 16, 2025. This position includes a course load of six (6) assignments (in-person instruction) through the course of the academic year (3:3 load) through a combination of teaching in foundational, intermediate, and advanced design courses in the areas of scenic and lighting design and equivalent design assignments within our mainstage season.
Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate must possess a terminal degree in an applicable field at the time employment begins. Qualified candidates will have previous teaching experience at the collegiate level as well as professional design/production experience in theatre and dance. The successful candidate will have a portfolio demonstrating excellent lighting and scenic design. Candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to create and maintain a cohesive creative scholarship and research program suitable for obtaining tenure and/or promotion, designing for outside companies and universities, publishing innovative technical or interpretive work, etc.

The successful candidate must meet eligibility requirements to work in the U.S. at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment.

We are looking for a candidate that is committed to teaching undergraduates, has a passion for collaborative storytelling, excels in communication, and has a desire to be part of a compassionate team of educators and practitioners. Experience with sustainable practices within the field is desired.

Competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. Starting date will be August 16, 2025. Review of applications will begin January 20, 2025. Search will remain open until the position is filled.

With approximately 100 majors, the Department of Theatre and Dance offers a B.A. in Theatre as well as B.F.A degrees in Performance, Musical Theatre, Design & Technology, and Management. The department is housed in a dedicated theatre facility including a 350-seat house with proscenium/thrust stage, a black box performance space, studio theatre, design studio, fully equipped shops, a dance/movement studio, a vocal studio, a smart classroom, and a computer lab.
