The Rutgers Institute for Nicotine and Tobacco Studies (formerly Rutgers Center for Tobacco Studies) is undergoing dynamic and transformative growth. The Rutgers Institute for Nicotine and Tobacco Studies is one of the nation's leading tobacco focused research centers and its faculty have received over $50 million in extramural funding over the past two decades. The Institute's efforts are focused on their mission of reducing and ultimately eliminating, tobacco-related morbidity and mortality.
Five Centers or Programs currently operate at the Institute including a Tobacco Center for Regulatory Science, the Center of Excellence for Rapid Surveillance of Tobacco, the Tobacco Dependence Program, a Tobacco Industry Marketing Program, and a Tobacco Control Law & Policy Resource Center. |

Rutgers is seeking a Assistant Director, Data Core for the Institute for Nicotine and Tobacco Studies, located in New Brunswick, NJ The Assistant Director will play a crucial role in ensuring the planning and operation of the Office of Survey Methods and Data Analysis (
SMDA) and collaborating on tobacco research.
This position is responsible for managing daily activities, supervising and guiding a team of data analysts, and making scientific contributions to research projects at
INTS in the capacity of a methodologist. Additionally, the Assistant Director will contribute to efforts aimed at identifying, planning, and operationalizing initiatives geared towards enhancing the overall methodological environment and resources at
INTS. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, a robust background in survey methods and data analysis, and the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects efficiently.
Duties include:
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Office of Survey Methods and Data Analysis.
- Facilitate writing project scope and quotes, and invoicing.
- Supervise and mentor a team of data analysts.
- Contribute to development of survey methodology and/or data analysis tools, such as R packages, methods briefs, and brown-bags.
- Identify new opportunities for SMDA to support investigator

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities |
- Master's degree in survey methodology, epidemiology, biostatistics, or a related field with at least two years supervisory experience or PhD with supervisory experience in a research lab.
- Must have experience applying generalized linear models and mixed effects modeling approaches to analyze cross-sectional and longitudinal survey data from simple and complex sampling designs; and creating summary tables and data visualizations.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present complex information to investigators from different academic fields (e.g. public health, psychology, medicine).
- Familiarity with academic research processes, including study design, data collection, and publication.
- Proficiency in statistical software, preferably R. Ability to learn and integrate other related computer applications into existing operations.
- Must have excellent project management, time management, communication, interpersonal, decision making, analytic, and reporting skills.
- Must be able to work with a wide range of individuals with diverse backgrounds and perspectives on data usage including faculty, staff, and senior administrators, as well as individuals at other institutions and government offices.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Experience with survey weighting and weight trimming preferred but not required.
- Previous experience in tobacco or nicotine research is desired.
