Position Summary:

Peer recovery support is the process of giving and receiving non-clinical assistance to achieve long-term recovery from addiction challenges. The Peer Recovery Coach (PRC) is an active member of the Harbor Light clinical team and provides peer support to current residential and outpatient substance use/co-occurring disorder clients. Under supervision of the Clinical Supervisor, the PRC will function as a role model to peers; exhibiting competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills; serve as a consumer advocate, providing consumer information and peer support for clients in outpatient and inpatient settings. The PRC performs a wide range of tasks assisting peers in retaining independence within the community and mastery over their own recovery process.

Essential Responsibilities:



  • Assist clients in articulating personal goals for recovery using one-to-one and group sessions.
  • Assist clients in working with their case manager or treatment team in determining the steps he/she needs to take to achieve these goals and self-directed recovery.
  • Assist clients in locating, joining and finding means to participate in self-help/support groups such as NA, AA and Celebrate Recovery.
  • Model and teach problem solving techniques with individuals and groups.
  • Support clients' vocational choices and assist them in choosing a job that matches their strengths, overcoming job-related anxiety by reviewing job applications, and providing interview tips.
  • Assist clients in building social skills in the community that will enhance job acquisition and tenure.
  • Teach and role model the value of every individual's recovery experience.
  • Assist the client in obtaining decent and affordable housing of his/her choice, identifying possible barriers and directing client to community resources available to support self-sufficiency.
  • Assist client in developing empowerment skills and combating stigma through self-advocacy.
  • With assistance from the Treatment Supervisor, the PRC will work with the clients and other treatment team staff to develop a treatment/recovery plan based on each client identified goals. The PRC will maintain documentation in the electronic medical record.
  • Establish and maintain professional and timely documentation in the electronic medical records system. The PRC is responsible for his/her own documentation and is expected to review, correct and seek assistance to ensure compliance.
  • The PRC will maintain a working knowledge of current trends and developments in substance use disorder and co-occurring disorders by reading relevant materials and participating in continuing education seminars, webinars and other in-service training when offered.


  • Perform other duties as assigned.



Qualifications:

Education/Experience:



  • Must possess a High School diploma or equivalent.



    • Self-identified as a person who has direct personal experience living in recovery from substance use/co-occurring disorder.
    • Have significant experience (36-months minimum) working on his/her own recovery and an ability to manage his/her own wellness






Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:




    • Be willing to publicly identify as a person living in recovery for the purposes of educating, role modeling, and providing hope to others about the reality of recovery
    • Knowledge of the Recovery process and the ability to facilitate recovery using established standardized substance abuse and mental health processes




Computer Skills:



  • Basic computer skills required



Certificates and Licenses:



  • Certified as a Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) or clearly defined work plan to obtain such status within 30-days of employment
  • Complete Safe From Harm training, and keep current as needed
  • Valid Michigan Chauffeur License and approved by The Salvation Army MVR
  • B. test and police clearance required
