CDS operates four dining units, Browne Dining Hall, Red Door Marketplace, Broad Cafe, Avery Kitchen, and 4 student dining halls, serving our entire campus community of undergraduate, graduate, postdoc, faculty, staff, and visitors. We serve over 900 undergraduate students, 7 days a week, on our Meal Plan Program and maintain a burgeoning Catering Department.

Job Summary

Under minimal supervision, this position is responsible for maintaining and organizing any and all Dining Services locations. This includes, but is not limited to, freezers, refrigerators, dry goods, paper goods, linen, and chemical storage areas. This position will ensure all products are rotated by date of receipt and expiration date, and ensures all products are stored in accordance to health & safety guidelines and requirements. This position will assist all units with receiving and the transportation of goods to various locations. They will assist other departments as needed. They will perform work in accordance with Institute and regulatory agencies' safety standards. A positive, can-do attitude and teamwork are required. Attention to detail and the ability to efficiently organize items and task are a must. We are searching for a candidate that is also flexible, resourceful, and has the drive to take ownership & initiative in any given task.

Essential Job Duties



  • Responsible for keeping all storage areas clean and organized at all times.
  • Responsible for safely & efficiently receiving & stocking all orders.
  • Transports goods to and from various units
  • Assists all units with various tasks as needed.
  • Picks up deliveries from the Caltech Post Office and Shipping & Receiving
  • Works with the Storeroom Ordering & Inventory team member in maintaining par stock levels of all items ordered & received in Dining Services
  • Ensure locking of all storage areas throughout the day and at end of shift
  • Informs the managing chefs in the event equipment is not in proper working order.
  • Knowledge and understanding of food allergy awareness.
  • Understand correct food & chemical handling according to local health department guidelines.
  • In the event the Storeroom Inventory & Ordering team member is not present, this position will be required to place orders using order lists as a guide.
  • Responsible for adhering to all CDS standards and procedures.
  • Cultivates a positive and productive workplace through communication, teamwork, ownership, and initiative.
  • Greet and interact with all customers and guests in a professional, genuine, and friendly manner.
  • Depending on shift, may be required to work some weekends, extended shifts, and over-time.
  • May temporarily work a different shift due to unforeseen events or seasonal high-volume event needs.
  • Must be able to handle adverse situations with calm, resolve, a can-do attitude, and positive mindset.
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as required or assigned.


Basic Qualifications



  • 1+ years of stocking and receiving experience.
  • Customer service oriented
  • Able to take direction with a positive attitude.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Adept using computers, accessing email, and using Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • The selected candidates must pass a pre-employment background investigation and post-offer physical examination to be hired for this position.
  • Selected candidate must maintain attendance and arrive on time for all shifts.
  • Must possess a food handler's certificate or ability to obtain one by the time of hire.


Preferred Qualifications



  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience working in a food service environment.
  • 1+ years working in a fast-paced, team environment.

Hiring Range

$19.00 - $21.25 Per Hour

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
