Department Information

The Institute for Matter and Systems (IMS), an Interdisciplinary Research Institute at Georgia Tech, solves societal, technological, and scientific challenges by integrating knowledge, methods, and expertise across disciplines:

  • Fundamental science to comprehend and control matter from the nanoscale to the mesoscale.
  • The synthesis, processing, and characterization of materials to achieve desired properties.
  • The design and fabrication of novel devices and components with enhanced capabilities.
  • The integration of materials, devices, and components into larger systems.
  • Computing, modeling, simulation, and big data to advance progress at all length scales.
  • Integration of economic, business, and social factors to ensure sustainable and equitable benefits in all stages of research, from conceptualization to impact.

IMS enables interdisciplinary research in areas including:

  • Microelectronic technologies that efficiently sense, process, store, and communicate information while addressing issues related to security, privacy, and inequality.
  • Built environment technologies for sectors such as automotive, infrastructure and energy that enhance strength, sustainability, reliability, resiliency, and efficiency.
  • Human-centric technologies that improve human health, wellness, and performance.
  • Frontiers in research infrastructure such as characterization, modeling, simulation, and artificial intelligence that impact numerous technologies.
Job Summary

Responsibility to identify, cultivate, and assist in building strategic partnerships that align with the Institute's multidisciplinary priorities. Apply a consistent approach to strategic planning to help maintain the organizational process and help steward the achievement of priorities to assist senior leaders in setting goals that align with strategic initiatives. Responsible for setting employee goals, assessing employee performance, providing feedback, and making pay recommendations.

Responsibilities

Job Duty 1 -
Apply domain expertise in manufacturing and materials to advance research collaborations between external partners and specific Georgia Tech units whose research interest match the partners' interests

Job Duty 2 -
Coordinate response of Georgia Tech researchers working with external partners on collaborative research opportunities including major federal programs; support the development of new and strategic Institute initiatives

Job Duty 3 -
Build relationships with industry and corporate clients to engage stakeholders in areas that are aligned with Institute research and education initiatives. Assess the impact and effectiveness of research engagement efforts and propose improvements as needed

Job Duty 4 -
Leverage Institute resources and use knowledge of industry research environments to tailor partnership models that drive a culture of open innovation and enterprise transformation

Job Duty 5 -
Participate in meetings in order to connect partnership activities among the interdisciplinary research institutes with institute-level development activities. Prepare reports and presentations to share progress and outcomes with key stakeholders and leadership

Job Duty 6 -
Identify potential funding opportunities for research projects. Collaborate with researchers to secure funding from various sources, such as government grants, private foundations, or industry partnerships

Job Duty 7 -
Perform other job-related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Science related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Experience
Five to seven years of job-related experience

Preferred Qualifications

The Research Engagement Manager will identify, develop, and execute partnerships that connect IMS faculty, researchers, and activities with stakeholders such as industry, government, and philanthropic organizations. Partnerships include sponsorship of research with IMS research centers and programs, programs that support the training of graduate students, workforce development programs, and external support for and usage of IMS research facilities.

  • A Bachelors Degree in a relevant science or engineering field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in understanding and translating science and technology.
  • A Master's degree or Ph.D. in a relevant science or engineering field.
  • A minimum of five years of related experience.
  • Outstanding and proven ability to build and maintain strong interpersonal and professional working relationships with a wide range of constituents.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise initiative, develop strategy, and make decisions.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills related to science, technology, or other complex areas.
  • Previous experience with university and external research and development including sponsored research agreements, nondisclosure agreements, technology transfer, and grant writing.
  • Previous experience with identifying, developing and executing partnerships.
  • Occasional travel is required.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

SKILLS
o Previous experience with university and external research and development including sponsored
research agreements, nondisclosure agreements, and intellectual property a plus
o Excellent skills in building long-term relationships and written and verbal communications skills.
Use of Salesforce a plus

Other Information

Other responsibilities included are:

  • Build relationships that engage external stakeholders in areas that are aligned with IMS research, workforce development programs and shared facilities.
  • Develop and execute tailored partnership models and collaborative research programs between IMS and its stakeholders.
  • Coordinate IMS engagement activities with other relevant organizations at Georgia Tech including other Interdisciplinary Research Institutes, the Colleges, and the Georgia Tech Offices of Corporate Engagement, Commercialization, and Development.
  • Develop and track performance metrics for partnership activities, including the number of new partnerships, funding secured, and impact on IMS research and development programs. Report progress to IMS leadership and provide insights for strategic planning
  • Perform other related job duties as assigned including, but not limited to, creation of presentations describing IMS activities and assistance in writing and coordinating large research center proposals.
  • Develop an understanding of the research, workforce development programs and shared facilities within IMS and its research centers, programs and initiatives by effectively communicating with its diverse group of faculty, researchers, and employees.
