Summary:

Under the supervision of Histology Supervisor perform a wide variety of duties relative to the completion and distribution of histological slides maintenance of stainers and coverslippers handling of blocks and handling of inventory. Resolves issues within the scope of authority or refers appropriately.

Responsibilities:

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Enter specimen data in computer organize and print logs and labels. Coordinate slide distribution.

2. Operate automated slide strainers and automated cover slipper. Label slides.

3. Distribute slides and paperwork to pathologists and residents following daily schedule.

4. Maintain level of staining solutions in automated stainers and perform daily maintenance on stainers and coverslippers.

5. Maintain logs and related paperwork.

6. Receives and stock inventory replenish chemicals from store room to individual lab areas.

7. Handle blocks to include transport from surgical suite to histology as well as scanning blocks into transport and embedding logs.
8. Maintain current knowledge of safety and injury management attend appropriate training classes report potential safety hazards to supervisor.

9. Maintain safety environmental and infection control practices in accordance with established hospital department policies procedures and objectives.

10. Perform other related duties as required.

Other information:

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

1. Level of knowledge normally obtained through the completion of an Associates Degree in Laboratory Science or college level courses in Biology and Chemistry or equivalent.

2. General knowledge of laboratory procedures for handling specimens within the Histology laboratory.

3. Strong organizational and clerical skills to maintain a variety of logs and records.

4. Good communication skills.

5. Working knowledge of Windows and good computer skills.

EXPERIENCE:

Six months laboratory experience. Additional relevant education may be substituted for experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Working conditions are generally good with some exposure to odors and chemicals. Any potential hazards are minimized by following established precautionary procedures.

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

Performs independently within the department*s policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to the supervisor when clarification of the departmental policies and procedures are required.

None.
