The Department of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology has a full-time (1.0) FTE faculty position at the rank of Instructor for a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA). Under the direction of the full-time faculty or designee, this position provides inpatient and outpatient medical care services primarily at the University of Colorado Hospital Anschutz Medical Campus (UCH AMC) and occasionally at Highlands Ranch Hospital (UCH HRH). The Surgical Oncology program at the University of Colorado Hospital is a high volume, high acuity service. The candidate will be expected to provide independent clinical services for patients seen on the surgical oncology service teams. There will be involvement in the complete spectrum of care from initial patient contact through discharge. Specific duties of the position will include inpatient responsibilities such as rounding, writing orders, and participating in the care provided to surgical oncology patients while they are in the hospital. Close collaboration with the surgeons, APPs, hospital and clinical staff will be necessary. Eligibility for prescriptive authority is required. The Division of Surgical Oncology is seeking an energetic individual(s) for a full-time APP position to join the growing Surgical Oncology Program. The title for this position would be Instructor of Surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Colorado. Individual(s) hired will work directly with surgical oncology faculty. Key Responsibilities:
- Evaluate and manage surgical oncology patients. This includes obtaining a thorough history and physical exam, ordering appropriate testing, enacting a treatment plan and counseling patients regarding their condition and prognosis.
- See and evaluate patients in the hospital on the surgical oncology service and consultations placed to the surgical oncology team. Provide documentation, an assessment and care plan for the inpatient stay and discharge care planning.
- The candidate will provide care to patients on the inpatient wards, in the intensive care unit, acute care areas including evaluation of patients in the emergency department, occasionally assist in the OR, and in the outpatient clinic.
- Evaluate and manage patients with urgent or emergent complaints in conjunction with the surgeon and/or surgical residents.
- Close collaboration with surgical oncology surgeons, sub-specialty surgeons, surgical residents, emergency medicine physicians, intensivists and hospital staff will be necessary. Frequent collaboration with allied health teams (care manager, social worker, care coordinator) for patient disposition planning
- Professional interaction with referring physicians and staff, emergency medical personnel and primary care providers is essential.
- The NP/PA will be a critical part of service continuity and a link between the inpatient and outpatient environments for patients.
- Participate in clinic sponsored educational opportunities.
- Provide monitoring and continuity of care for patients between physician visits.
- Attend required meetings and participate in committees as requested.
- Maintain competency and enhance professional growth and development through continuing education, conferences, and seminars. Attend mandatory training.
- Participate in quality improvement activities; assist in maintaining compliance with JCAHO accreditation and other internal and external regulatory standards.
- Support and uphold established organizational policies, procedures, objectives related to quality improvement, safety, environmental and infection control.
- Maintain patient confidentiality.
- The census and acuity of clinical activity varies service to service and NP/PAs may at times be asked to provide cross coverage clinical care on different surgical oncology services and locations to deal with this issue.
- This position is primarily for day coverage but will occasionally require coverage of weekend and holiday shifts.

Qualifications:
|
Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a Master's Degree in Nursing and/or a graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
- Current license to practice as an Advanced Practice Nurse and/or Physician Assistant with prescriptive privileges.
- Meets and maintains specific requirements of the Nursing Credential Review Board (Nurse Practitioner) and the Medical Review Board (Physician Assistant).
Preferred Qualifications: - Two years of experience in surgical oncology preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with a diverse professional and patient population.
- Knowledge of professional, medical, and surgical practice to give and evaluate patient care in the area of surgical oncology.
- Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations and procedures to administer patient care.
- Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
- Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
- Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of medicine and surgery to provide on-going patient care.
- Skill in taking medical history, assessing medical condition and interpreting findings.
- Skills in preparing and maintaining records, writing reports, and responding to correspondence.
- Skill in developing and maintaining department quality assurance.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients and their family members, medical staff, residents, fellows, medical students, and the public.
- Ability to maintain quality control standards.
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
- Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
- Ability to communicate clearly as an integral member of a team

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE: $99,717 to $140,941. The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
