  • Hours: Monday-Friday, days/evenings, and rotating week-ends and holidays

A Brief Overview:
The Pathologist Assistant NE oversee and perform the activates needed for the evolution, examination, description, dissection and sectioning of the gross tissues in surgical pathology under the direct supervision of the Pathologist. Serves as an assistant to Pathology Fellows and residents in their training in gross surgical pathology and are accountable to the Pathologists on medical issues. Performs various auxiliary functions such as photography and specimen radiology, as well as, performs various training and supervisory functions as assigned. This position reports directly to the Director of Surgical Pathology and the Manager of Anatomic Pathology.

  • Is knowledgeable and compliant with Federal, State and local laws that apply to area of responsibility.
  • Remains abreast of policies, regulations, guidelines, techniques, procedures and methodology in anatomic pathology.
  • Examines and prepares surgical pathology cases for microscopic evaluation by providing gross description, dissection and sections.
  • Assuring appropriate specimen accessioning, obtaining clinical history, including scans, x-rays, laboratory data to assist with specimen dissection.
  • Participates in and performs frozen sections, intraoperative consultations and maintains accurate records of all activities.
  • Photographing all pertinent gross specimens.
  • Performs duties according to the policies and procedures of the Anatomic pathology dept. including compliance and maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Adheres to all policies and procedures related to handling, storage and disposal of all specimens, while adhering to regulatory and compliance standards regarding biohazard and safety.
  • Assures that tests are prepared properly at all stages from specimen collection through results reporting and performs additional special handling of the specimens if necessary including radiology, photography, special fixation, cultures and tissue procurements.
  • Obtaining biological specimens such as blood, tissue and toxicological material for studies such as flow cytometry, image analysis, immunohistochemistry, and performing special procedures including procuring tissue for tumor bank/research.
  • Participates in research projects as requested.
  • Oversees the operation of the Surgical Pathology Gross Room and Frozen section areas.
  • Assures proper maintenance of equipment, provision of adequate supplies, and cleanliness of the surgical pathology suite and maintaining documentation of all.
  • Performs such administrative, supervisory, teaching, and other duties as may be assigned by laboratory manager or medical director.
  • Monitors employees and residents to ensure work flow is done in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Assists with the orientation, training, and competency evaluation of new hires, existing personnel, and Pathology Residents and Pathologists Assistant students on clinical site rotation, in the Gross Room.
  • Provides input to Manager/Director regarding staff performance in area of responsibility for the 90-day probationary, semi-annual review, and annual reviews.
  • At the Manager/Director's request, assists with writing annual performance appraisals for employees working in the Gross Room and providing feedback to employees and students.
  • In conjunction with the Manager/Director establishes policies and procedures in the Gross Room for competency testing and oversees such testing to ensure that staff are competent and maintain competency to process specimens promptly and proficiently.
  • Identifies any employees in need of remedial training in the Gross Room, documents these finding and submits them to the Manager/Director for follow up.
  • Assists in establishing a program for remediation of these employees and provides daily documentation of their performance to management.
  • Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.
  • Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested.
  • Meets all CME requirements and maintains current certification through ASCP.
  • Serves as a role model for other health care members of the hospital and/or NorthShore Medical Group staff as well as for patient/family.


What you will need:

  • Bachelors Degree Required
  • Medical Doctor or Pathologists' Assistant with successful completion of a NAACLS Pathologists' Assistant program with certification: No additional experience required: or Associates or Bachelor Degree with on the job training, including grossing of all specimen levels and five (5) years Pathology grossing experience.
  • The Pathologists' Assistant shall demonstrate the ability to deliver health care by providing cost effective, high quality Anatomic Pathology services including performing gross Surgical Pathology tissue examinations and frozen sections under the direct supervision of the attending Pathologist; developing gross room procedures and policies to manage the efficiency and quality of standards performed in the gross room.
  • Skill in anticipating and reacting calmly to stressful situations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and work in harmony with other departments.
  • Capable of identifying problems that may adversely effect test performance or reporting of results and taking corrective action or notifying appropriate supervisory personnel.
  • Ability to accurately type 20 words per minute.
  • Basic computer knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel.
  • Meets ASCP, as defined by CLIA, requirements or college credits defined in the science disciplines, with on the job training. Medical Doctor or Bachelor's degree or higher in Medical Technology, Histology, Biology or related field and completion of a NAACLS Pathologists' Assistant program is strongly preferred for non-Medical Doctors. Required And
  • Current certification as a Pathologists' Assistant or eligibility with American Society for Clinical Pathology strongly preferred for non-Medical Doctors. Required
