Position description

The Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of California Davis, School of Medicine, is recruiting for a full-time Project Scientist at the Assistant rank in specialty area of circadian control and the sleep-wake cycle in the UC Davis Fuller Lab. This recruitment is conducted at the assistant rank. The resulting hire will be at the assistant rank, regardless of the proposed appointee's qualifications.

The Project Scientist makes significant and creative contributions to a research or creative project in his/her academic discipline. The appointee possesses the subject matter expertise and the creative energy necessary to function at a high level of competence. The appointee will participate in activities to study the sleep-wake cycle and the circadian control, using rodent models. Appointees with Project Scientist series may engage in University and public service. They do not have teaching responsibilities. Although the Project Scientist is expected to work independently under the general guidance of an academic member with an independent research program (i.e., Professor, Professional Researcher, etc.), they are not required to develop an independent research program or reputation. The Project Scientist will carry out research or creative programs with supervision by an individual in an academic title that carries with it automatic Principal status. The Project Scientist does not usually serve as a Principal Investigator but may do so by exception.

The incumbent will work under the supervision of Patrick Fuller, PhD.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

1) RESEARCH (85% Effort)

Research activity (70%)

This position requires creative contributions to and collaborative development of an active research program investigating topics relevant to the research area of circadian control and the sleep-wake cycle.

a. The appointee will help to determine research goals in consultation with the Principal Investigator. The Project Scientist will design specific projects, including the selection of appropriate methods and techniques.

b. The candidate will translate the deliverables and vision of the Fuller Lab research into tactical milestones. Will communicate effectively with all members of the research team to ensure all components of the research progress.

c. The candidate will prepare progress reports, presentation, or other documentation and ensure documents are submitted on time. Will prepare presentation materials as needed to communicate the status and goals of the project.

d. The candidate will interact with funding agencies and prepare modifications of budgets and other grants as needed.

e. The candidate will provide regular reporting on budget and fiscal management while observing all University and Sponsor policies and procedures.

f. In some cases, the appointee may supervise students or technicians regarding the technical aspects of the research, including methods development, trouble-shooting problems, interpreting results and planning follow-up experiments.

Publication (10%)

a. The appointee will publish research in peer-reviewed journals either independently or in collaboration with the PI or other members of the research team. The candidate will help with data acquisition, data analyses, statistical analyses, and other functions necessary for publication by the candidate and other members of the group.

b. The candidate will assist in literature review for each publication, and with either doing the initial draft or participating in editing manuscript drafts from others in the group.

c. They will facilitate and coordinate feedback and writing contributions from multiple internal and external co-authors, compile feedback, monitor versions, and submit final manuscript to publisher.

Grant Acquisition (5%)

a. The appointee will assist in writing proposals for funding from federal and state agencies and other funding organizations.

b. The appointee will prepare and assist in the preparation of reports as required by granting agencies and prepare modifications of budgets and other grant components as needed.

2) PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (10% Effort)

a. The candidate will participate in professional societies and conferences appropriate to his/her specific field of circadian control and the sleep-wake cycle and will serve as a reviewer of research proposals and scientific publications as appropriate.

b. The candidate will attend seminars to present research results and may give oral presentations to public and professional interest groups.

c. They will interact and establish research connections with investigators from other institutions and from industry.

3) UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5% Effort)

a. The appointee is encouraged to participate in university and public service such as engaging in public outreach activities that include presenting scientific research results to the general public.

b. The candidate may participate in activities of committees within the department, school, campus, and other University entities, as appropriate.


Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

* Ph.D. in Neuroscience or related field

* At least 5 years of experience in related field post terminal degree

* Research experience in multidisciplinary fields such as circadian study, in vivo electrophysiology, optogenetics, chemogenetics, anatomical study of the brain.

* Evidence of academic accomplishment in peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations

* Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and collegially in a diverse environment
