Purpose of Position

The Emerging Energy Transaction Lead reports to the Vice President of Emerging Energy and supports the rapidly growing renewable and emerging energy business on the Permanent University Fund Lands (PUF Lands). The Emerging Energy Transaction Lead will be an integral contributor on a team responsible for the generation of commercial, financial and strategic guidance on renewable and emerging energy projects of all sizes, shepherding projects through diligence, leasing, execution, and administration.

Essential Functions

  • Provide commercial, financial, and project management support on a broad range of complex renewable and emerging energy projects.
  • Apply corporate and project finance concepts, delineate opportunities for stronger returns, and create financial models to evaluate potential projects, recommend adjustments, and determine best land/subsurface use among competing proposals and current land uses.
  • Interface with a growing team of business, land, and technical specialists to progress and deliver renewable and emerging energy projects on PUF Lands, shepherding each project through feasibility, contracting, construction, and operational phases.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and visualizations to communicate findings, recommendations, and progress to management, key stakeholders, and executive leadership.
  • Lead communication with developers to assess proposals, conduct due diligence, and use judgement to assess strategy alignment.
  • Utilize strong organizational skills to maintain and enhance database tools and systems related to emerging energy projects and research.
  • Analyze existing leases and new project proposals to enhance knowledge of market conditions and drive effective negotiation strategies.
  • Review legal agreements to summarize key issues, suggest changes, and manage feedback integration.
  • Develop revenue tracking and forecasting tools for existing leases to facilitate administration, increase awareness of incoming revenue within a high growth area of the PUF.
  • Provide comprehensive market and industry research of conventional and emerging energy technologies, such as solar, wind, geothermal, hydrogen generation and storage, carbon sequestration, among others.
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams to identify and evaluate new technologies, geographic locations, and best practices for a broad range of renewable and emerging energy projects on PUF Lands.
  • Stay updated with industry trends, regulations, and emerging technologies in renewable and emerging energy and energy management.

  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Understanding of trends, technology, regulations, and commercial opportunities in the renewable and emerging energy field.
Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Engineering, Energy Management, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of work experience in relevant fields, such as renewable energy development or project management, low carbon or energy transition technology, or a combination of other relevant fields including consulting and finance related to the emerging energy industry.
  • Knowledge & contacts in emerging energy industry to support industry research & business development.
  • Existing familiarity and/or willingness to learn GIS mapping tools to support job project diligence and management.
  • Knowledge of the practices, policies, and procedures of the oil and gas, minerals, and land management business.

Additional Information

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to a minimum of 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. Participation in TRS is mandatory.
