Job Summary

The Dean of Academic Affairs at Glendale Community College (GCC) is a key leadership position responsible for the strategic oversight of academic departments, the Early College programs, and the student support services of testing and tutoring. This position requires a dynamic and strategic leader to drive academic innovation, support faculty excellence, and advance student success. As part of GCC's leadership team, the Dean of Academic Affairs promotes a culture of collaboration, process improvement, data-driven decision making, programmatic and service excellence, and demonstrates a genuine commitment to a culture of inclusivity and belongingness.

To best serve the students, department, and college, this position requires a physical presence on campus, with the possibility of partial remote work depending on business needs.

Essential Functions

30% - Provides leadership within a shared governance model to guide strategic planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of instructional programs and academic support services in collaboration with department chairs, faculty, and staff, while ensuring that programs and services meet educational standards and are aligned with the college's mission and goals.

25% - Fosters effective communication and collaboration across the college, among faculty, staff, administration, and community partners to promote college initiatives. Collaborates with partners to develop and promote higher education pathways, including dual enrollment and university transfer. Supports assessment of student learning, monitors data related to student success, retention, completion, scheduling, and related key performance indicators. Collaborates with departments to implement data-informed continuous improvement. Coordinates program reviews and other instructional initiatives.

20% - Promotes faculty and staff professional development; assists college leadership with recruiting and retaining residential faculty and staff; conducts faculty and staff evaluations; participates in the department chair evaluation process.

10% - Represents the college and academic affairs through service on executive councils and committees, budget oversight, grant administration, compliance with district and government policies, community outreach, and district assignments. Addresses student concerns related to instruction.

10% - Focuses on improving student success through leadership of academic support services, and other academic resources that contribute to student success.

5% - Perform other duties as required

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications for Academic pathway: Master's Degree in a teaching field related to area(s) of assignment and four years of experience in an academic leadership and/or supervisory role in higher education and three years of teaching that includes curriculum/coursework development. Examples of academic leadership/supervisory experience includes: division/department chair, project management, policy development, administration, evaluation and compliance, committee leadership, program director, and shared governance. No degree equivalency.

Desired Qualifications
  1. Doctoral degree in a recognized academic field of study from an accredited college or university
  2. Three (3) or more years of full-time teaching experience in the community colleges
  3. Five (5) or more years of leadership experience serving as a dean, or program director, or department chair, or similar leadership position
  4. Demonstrated experience of future focus approach to academic leadership through evidence-based decision making
  5. Experience identifying external opportunities to support college programs through community partnerships, grants, and/or intergovernmental agreements (IGA)
  6. Demonstrates cross-institutional collaboration to achieve institutional goals
  7. Experience in successfully leading change management strategies in a higher education environment


Special Working Conditions

  • Travel to campus during interview/selection process will be at candidate's own expense
  • May be required to travel or be assigned to all MCCCD locations
  • May require numerous evenings or weekends
