About This Role:

The Department of Diagnostic Medicine/Pathobiology at Kansas State University is seeking a highly motivated Post-Doctoral Research Fellow to join a newly established research team led by Dr. Laura Miller.

This is an exciting opportunity to conduct independent research focusing on immunology and virology in the context of animal health. You will be involved in all aspects of the research process, from planning and conducting experiments to analyzing data and contributing to scientific publications.


What You'll Do:

  • Participate in pig trials to study host-virus and vaccine interactions.
  • Develop an immunogenicity analysis platform for future research.
  • Establish and utilize advanced laboratory techniques, including flow cytometry, T-cell restimulation assays, and virus isolation.
  • Lead and perform cutting-edge immune and viral studies.
  • Collaborate with internal and external researchers, including USDA scientists.
  • Participate in outreach activities such as farm visits and extension programs.
  • Assist in the development of research projects, hypotheses, and data interpretation.
  • Contribute to grant proposals to secure funding for ongoing research.


Worksite Options:

This position is required to be performed on-site. Work is performed on employer premises or designated assignment location.

What You'll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Two full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree, if directly related. Related degrees may include Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biology, Animal science, Agriculture sciences, Anatomy, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Immunology, Neurosciences, Biomedical Sciences or Veterinary Sciences.
  • Possess a strong background in immunology and/or virology.
  • Demonstrate experience with cell culture techniques, flow cytometry, and a willingness to learn about the pig model.
  • Have a proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Be a skilled scientific writer with experience in preparing peer-reviewed publications.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Hold a recent PhD in virology, molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, microbiology, bioinformatics, or a related field.
  • Hands-on experience with advanced molecular biology and functional genomics techniques, including but not limited to PCR, RT-qPCR, cloning, expression, recombinant protein purification, RNAi gene silencing, and CRISPR-Cas gene editing.
  • A history of manuscript and grant writing/editing, presenting at scientific conferences, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
