Position Overview

Essential Job Duties
The Sunny Day Flooding Project is seeking a postdoctoral researcher with expertise in satellite remote sensing to join a highly interdisciplinary and community-engaged research project. The researcher will use different satellite platforms - including Sentinel-1 ( SAR), Sentinel-2 (optical), Surface Water and Ocean Topography ( SWOT), and small-satellite imagery ( SAR and optical) - to analyze and monitor floods in coastal regions that occur outside of extreme storms like hurricanes.

The primary goal of this research is to evaluate and enhance the accuracy and reliability of satellite observations for detecting shallow, hyperlocal flooding and to validate these observations with in-situ data and models. The researcher will work closely with Dr. Katherine Anarde (Coastal Engineering, NCSU) to analyze flood sensor data and with Dr. Chao Wang and Dr. Tamlin Pavelsky (Hydrology Remote Sensing, UNC-Chapel Hill) to perform comprehensive analyses of satellite data.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant and diverse research group across multiple universities dedicated to advancing our understanding of chronic flood hazards and contributing to climate adaptation strategies through innovative remote sensing approaches.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Collecting, organizing, and analyzing satellite datasets for flooding studies.
  • Establishing protocols for comparing gauge data to satellite data
  • Mentor interdisciplinary graduate students
  • Disseminate scientific findings in publications and at conferences
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams
