Junior UX/UI Designer - University Communications and Marketing

University Communications and Marketing is seeking a Junior UX/UI Designer to join the web strategy team.

This position will work closely with our developers, content specialists, and end-users to create sharp, attractive, and usable interfaces for our content management systems and other digital tools. The majority of the work will focus on our suite of web page layouts and the interface content editors use while creating their university websites. Additional, smaller scale projects may include email, microsites, forms, etc.

You will get the opportunity to improve the design of our web presence and work with our technical teams on the process of making it come alive. You will be in an Agile environment, where you can closely team-up on tasks and stories that need to be done. You will have access to the whole process, being able to have oversight on what's being done during development, code reviews, and testing of changes.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Creates wireframes and presents design plans to stakeholders; uses rapid prototyping as needed.
  • Plans, develops, and maintains UX/UI guidelines.
  • Comfortable working with modern front-end tools and frameworks to anticipate successful design approaches and to collaborate closely with front end developers to bring the designs to life.
  • Own the University's pattern libraries.
  • Works alongside the rest of the development team on QA tasks, especially focusing on accessibility testing on each CMS release.
  • Works with UCM's design and technical team to create, maintain, and enhance our digital presence.
  • Shares UI best practices (including accessibility and visual design) with the team, and applies those to create a flexible, configurable, elegant, and user-centered visitor experience.
  • Stays current with the latest developments in their field.
  • Uses Agile methodology, providing input on story and task creation and refinement.
  • Works closely with other development groups to provide guidance on how to implement the pattern libraries correctly and effectively.

You should demonstrate:

  • Passion for usability heuristics with special attention to digital accessibility, always designing with these in mind.
  • Knowledge of the latest WCAG accessibility guidelines
  • Strong Oral and written communications skills
  • Problem-solving and reasoning skills
  • Ability to take direction as well as ability to work independently
  • Ability to work cooperatively and professionally with teammates and colleagues.
  • Ability to adjust priorities to deliver projects to specification

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and experience in digital/responsive design; experience with Sketch, Figma or AdobeXD
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

  • Work Posture: This position is operating on a hybrid schedule, with an on-campus/in office presence 3 days a week.
