Job Summary

Classification of Respiratory Therapist I or Respiratory Therapist II will be determined based upon the qualifications of the selected candidate.

The Respiratory Therapist I (RT I) provides a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic respiratory care services to patients of all age groups. Responds to cardiopulmonary emergencies providing airway maintenance and manual and mechanical ventilatory support using a variety of devices and techniques. Administers therapeutic gases, inhaled aerosol medications and humidity therapy. Obtains, reviews, and interprets data and assesses the need for and response to respiratory care interventions and consults with medical and nursing personnel to optimize patient care planning. Performs arterial blood gas analysis and a variety of cardiopulmonary diagnostic procedures. Provides patient and family instruction in respiratory therapy self-administration and proper use of equipment and supplies.

The Respiratory Therapist II: The Respiratory Therapist II serves as a role model and resource providing clinical leadership and service coordination that assures consistently high quality care and facilitating continuous improvement in respiratory care services. The Clinical Team Leader is responsible for providing patient care and assessment; interdisciplinary consultation; staff, patient, family, and community education; and performance monitoring.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Required Qualifications

Respiratory Therapist I:

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and to collaborate and work effectively within intra and inter departmental teams.
  • Promotes positive work relationships with peers, supervisors, and others. Is cooperative, receptive, and responsive to the needs of others.
  • Possess the knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. This includes but is not limited to the ability to perform all of the required procedures and assessments and possession of a thorough understanding of the techniques and rationale for the selection and application of respiratory care procedures.
  • Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations
Respiratory Therapist II:
  • Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner in the state of California
  • BLS
  • PALs - Specific to Pediatric Clinical Team Leaders / Core
  • NRP - Specific to Neonatal Clinical Team Leaders
  • RRT - Credentialed as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board of Respiratory Therapy
  • Maintains advanced knowledge in respiratory care theory and industry best practices. Proven ability to apply knowledge and skills to recommend improvements to Respiratory operations
  • Knowledge of medical center, and UC policies and processes. Deep knowledge of all relevant cardiopulmonary industry federal, state and local laws and regulations. Ability to apply policy knowledge to proactively identify potential risk areas in Respirator
  • Interpersonal skills to work collaboratively, coordinate and integrate with others throughout the organization. Maintains rapport and professional relationships with peers, peers in the industry, patients, multidisciplinary team members, management
  • Demonstrated abilities to listen actively, understand varying viewpoints and receive feedback. Skills to tactfully articulate and teach respiratory patient care concepts to staff.
  • Knowledge of Respiratory Program's registry and clinical databases and protocols and guidelines. Ability to troubleshoot issues.
  • Will participate in orientation and technical competency assessment of new RT 1 staff members.
  • Participate in RT II, team, or task force meetings
  • Participates in an interdisciplinary Respiratory Department project and maintains ownership of project with updates and revisions.
  • Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations

Preferred Qualifications

Respiratory Therapist I:

  • Prior experience and demonstrated abilities in:
    • Critical or emergency care
    • Implementation and application of patient-driven protocols.
Respiratory Therapist II:
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • ACLS
  • PALs - Specific to Non Pediatric Team Leader / Core Member
  • NRP - Specific to Non Neonatal Clinical Team Leader / Core Member
  • Proven analytical abilities and problem solving skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify options for resolution. Demonstrates sound judgement
  • Gaining skills to effectively manage employees along with multiple priorities
  • Learning leadership skills in mentoring and advising employees

License/Certification

Respiratory Therapist I:

  • Valid and Current California Respiratory Care Board Respiratory Care Practitioner License.
  • Current Registered Respiratory Therapy (RRT) Certificate from NBRC.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (HCP) certification.
Respiratory Therapist II:
  • Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner in the state of California
  • BLS
  • PALs - Specific to Pediatric Clinical Team Leaders / Core
  • NRP - Specific to Neonatal Clinical Team Leaders
  • RRT - Credentialed as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board of Respiratory Therapy
