About the Department
The Department of Communication has 32 faculty members (16 tenure track and 16 nontenure track). Communication faculty have a strong record of interdisciplinary collaboration, including across units within the university system (e.g., Psychology, Political Science, Gerontology, the School of Public Health, the Honors College, the Creative Media Industries Institute, the Atlanta Global Studies Center and the Transcultural Conflict and Violence Initiative). We also work with community partners, such as the Centers for Disease Control ( CDC), the Carter Center, Georgia Public Broadcasting, The Weather Channel, and CNN.
The Department of Communication offers undergraduate degrees in Speech Communication and Journalism (including concentrations in multi-media reporting, public relations, and media & society). We also offer an M.A. degree in Communication, including a research track in Communication Studies and a professional track in Digital Media Strategies. The graduate program in the department also includes a doctoral degree in Communication. Faculty teach required and elective undergraduate and graduate courses in any of these degree programs.

Position Description
The Assistant Professor position is a tenure track position with research, teaching, and service workload requirements. We seek scholars with research and teaching expertise in Strategic Communication. The candidate's scholarship will focus on the content, development and/or impact of messages and will intersect with one and/or more of the department's areas of expertise: political communication; health communication; public relations; media effects; race, ethnicity, and gender studies; or international communication. Candidates should have an active, potentially fundable, research program.
The candidate would teach a 2-2 load, and these courses would include required and elective courses in the graduate and undergraduate programs. The candidate will advise (and serve on committees for) graduate students on coursework, comprehensive exams, and thesis/dissertation completion.

PhD in Communication, or related field, at the time of appointment
Preferred Qualifications/Experience
In addition to the position description, preferred qualifications include a candidate who:

  • utilizes quantitative or mixed methods,
  • has practical experience in the field of strategic communication,
  • has knowledge and experience with various forms of instructional technology, and/or
  • has experience with service in an academic environment.

An articulated research agenda in strategic communication that builds on departmental strengths (as identified above)
Demonstrated ability/potential to teach effectively in multiple modalities
Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations, etc
