32 Job Description:

Surgical Assistant Trainee actively participates in the Surgical Assistant (SA) Trainee orientation. After successful completion of orientation, the SA Trainee will provide direct support to the surgeon during the performance of surgical procedures. The SA trainee must demonstrate understanding and knowledge of surgical procedures, aseptic principles and develop surgical skills such as suturing. The SA trainee must demonstrate the proper use of surgical instrumentation and safe positioning of surgical patients. The SA Trainee needs to have the ability to focus concentration and be detail oriented while performing technical tasks. After completion of orientation the SA Trainee will perform job duties under the direct supervision of a surgeon or Surgical Assistant who holds certification issued by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). This is a temporary role that will last up to 18 months.

Major Responsibilities:

1. Actively participates in the preparation of the OR for cases.

2. Demonstrates awareness of and adherence to safety and legal requirements established at the hospital and unit level and established policies and procedures.

3. Assists in moving and positioning of patient while demonstrating safe positioning techniques.

4. Abilities required include, but not limited to clamping, cauterizing, suturing, inserting, injecting, manipulating, retracting, cutting and ligating tissue. Keeping surgical site dry by using suction and cautery. Provide best possible exposure at the discretion of the surgeon.

5. Utilizes appropriate suturing techniques with closure of body planes, wound closure of deep capsules, muscle, subcutaneous tissue and skin.

6. Assist in room clean up and removal of the soiled case cart, trash and return unused surgical instruments and supplies.

7. Works under the supervision of the designated mentor. Openly receives feedback as an opportunity to learn and grow professionally.

8. Adheres to regular and predictable attendance.
9. Personally interacts, engages with and cares for patients.
10. Ensures patient safety.

Education and Learning:

REQUIRED

High School Diploma or equivalency and a graduate of an accredited Surgical Technician Program (CST)

Work Experience:

REQUIRED

3 years of experience as a Surgical Technician

License and Certifications:

  • Certified Surgical Technician from NCCT or NBSTSA

  • Obtain Certification as a Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) through the National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA) or as a Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) through NBSTSA within 2 years from hire date.

  • Current Infant-Adult Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers (with hands on learning) from one of the following programs; American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

Static Standing (34-66% or 5.5 hours)

Stooping/Bending (6-33% or 3 hours)
