Mandatory Personnel
These positions are designated as 'mandatory' and, when contacted to report to work, the
employee is expected to reach the campus as expeditiously as possible using normal
precautions as dictated by the adverse weather conditions.
Primary Purpose of Position
To maintain clean and sanitary conditions in classrooms, labs, lecture halls, offices, common areas, restrooms, and various other areas within Academic, Athletic, and Administrative buildings on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Minimum Education/Experience
Required Minimum Qualifications:

Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Essential Job Duties
Building Environmental Services ( BES) Technician performs custodial services
support for the University. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Clean and care for academic buildings, offices, studios, and other State buildings.
  • Maintain equipment, return to designated storage areas, and keep in good working order.
  • Compile and maintain checklists and report needs to the BES Supervisor.
  • Assist the BES Supervisor in testing and making recommendations on supply and equipment purchases.
  • Maintain various types of floor surfaces to include vacuuming, spotting, and gum removal.
  • Follow established Facilities Management, UNC Charlotte, and State policies and Procedures.

Other Work Responsibilities

  • Use and care for all manual and power equipment and chemicals required in housekeeping, recycling, event support, and exterior litter removal functions.
  • Perform work that is guided by a daily schedule for general assignments.
  • Perform work that is subject to close review and inspection, with problems and special assignments not covered by instructions being referred to a supervisor.
  • Ability to perform medium to heavy physical work. Duties are repetitive in nature and include physically strenuous activities such as moving furniture, walking from building to building, operating heavy cleaning equipment, wearing a backpack vacuum, and delivering large quantities of housekeeping supplies.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned and/or delegated.

Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Work experience in institutional housekeeping and the ability to operate specialized
    cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to perform medium to heavy physical work.
  • Must have good organizational, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to properly use and care for all manual and power equipment and chemicals required in Building Environmental Services and floor care functions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate the English language (read, write, comprehend, and speak) required.
  • Effective skills in verbal, written, and interpersonal communication in English, however, excellent communication skills are preferred.
  • Computer literate, knowledge and skill with Google Chrome and Microsoft Word, and willingness to learn new programs required.
  • Ability to effectively work/interact with persons from different backgrounds.
  • Ability to foster and create an atmosphere of teamwork with coworkers, visitors, building occupants, and the entire campus community.
  • The selected candidate must have the mental and physical capabilities to perform the essential functions of this position with or without reasonable accommodations.
