The Diel Lab at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine seeks a technician to help support the laboratory research in Virology. The research in the Diel lab seeks to understand virus host interactions and immune responses to viral pathogens with the goal of developing improved vaccines, vaccine delivery platforms and other countermeasures to prevent diseases of humans and animals (https://diellab.net/).

The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct research projects and provide support to other students and staff in the laboratory.
  • Help with planning and organization of experiments in vitro and in vivo.
  • Perform testing of different chemical and thermal methods of inactivation of influenza virus in milk and other dairy products.
  • Determine influenza virus viability following chemical or thermal treatment of milk products.
  • Optimize experiments to use reporter influenza A viruses for these studies.
  • Help with in vitro and in vivo studies to assess inactivation of HPAI virus in dairy products.
  • Develop, establish and write standard laboratory operating procedures.
  • Work with and train graduate and undergraduate students on laboratory protocols and procedures, ensure adherence to disease control and chemical safety requirements.
  • Maintain the laboratory, help manage inventory of supplies, clean and autoclave glassware, and prepare hazardous waste for disposal.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of several ongoing projects in the lab.

Employees working in the laboratory must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department. Additionally, completion of Cornell Center for Animal Resources and Education (CARE) animal handling training will be required upon being hired for this position.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and 2 to 4 years relevant experience or equivalent combination
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to multitask and work and perform in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to keep detailed and accurate notes, exercise sound judgment and discretion in carrying out duties, dealing with issues, solving problems, and/or setting priorities.
  • Must be able to work independently as well as in a team-oriented environment.
  • Successful completion of Cornell Safety Courses in biological and chemical safety, and hazardous materials and waste.
  • Ability to work under BSL-3 laboratory conditions.
  • Ability and willingness to work with animals.
  • Ability to push, pull, lift or carry 20-50 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Microbiology or Animal Science with experience working in a biological research laboratory preferred.
  • Interest and/or experience in virology.
  • Experience working in a laboratory setting.
  • Experience working with cell culture.
  • Computer proficiency in data software, (e.g. Excel, Word, and statistical programs) helpful.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Important Details about the Position

  • This is an onsite position located in Ithaca, NY.
  • This is a full-time one-year term position with potential for extension contingent upon funding and performance.
  • We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position.
  • Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.

While the regular business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, the specific schedule may change to meet the needs of the business, requiring employees to work early mornings, evenings, weekends and University holidays and scheduled breaks.
