Position Description

The School of Theatre & Dance, within the Texas Tech University J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts, invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, tenured/tenure-track, Assistant Professor of Performing Arts Education. This position is for an innovative instructor of performing arts education, with a commitment to helping to guide the School of Theatre & Dance's programs to national distinction and nurturing the next generation of educators enrolled in our undergraduate programs. The successful candidate will begin full service in the Fall of 2025.

The qualified candidate will teach undergraduate courses and undertake development and/or creation of an arts-based education training program, addressing needs of K-12 educational environments. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute and collaborate on matters pertaining to curriculum, policy, and practice, as well as remain active in their field through adjacent scholarly/creative and service activities. The successful candidate will effectively mentor students across areas of research, process, and pedagogy, and participate in the school's formal advising process for undergraduate students and graduate students. The position also entails development of programs, curricula, degree plans, and certification programs, extending from a current Bachelor of Arts- Theatre Arts with Education Minor, participation in service activities at school, college, university-level, and beyond, potential service on dissertation or thesis committees, and embrace collegiality within and outside the school, particularly in building engaged partnerships.

About the College

The J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts comprises the School of Art, the School of Music, and the School of Theatre & Dance. With more than 120 faculty members and approximately 1,000 students, the College offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs, including the terminal M.F.A., D.M.A., and Ph.D. degrees. Our unique Ph.D. program in Fine Arts provides interdisciplinary education for students interested in engaging with multiple art forms or combining methodologies from the arts and sciences or arts and humanities. About the Department/School/Area

The School of Theatre & Dance is NAST accredited and offers the BA in Dance, BA in Theatre Arts; BFA in Theatre Arts: acting, design, musical theatre; BFA in Dance, MA in Dance Studies; MA in Theatre Arts; MFA in Theatre Arts: Arts Administration, Playwriting, Design, and Performance and Pedagogy; PhD. in Fine Arts with a Track in Theatre and multiple concentration options. A faculty of 22 full-time professors serve approximately 140 undergraduate students and 60 graduate students. Technical and administrative support includes a total of 8 staff positions. The School's resources include a state-of-the-art facility which opened in January 2023, the nationally renowned Marfa and WildWind Performance Lab programs, and annual participation in the Tennessee Williams Festival. Major/Essential Functions

In line with TTU's strategic priorities to engage and empower a diverse student body, enable innovative research and creative activities, and transform lives and communities through outreach and engaged scholarship, applicants should have experience working with diverse student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels within individual or across the areas of teaching, research/creative activity, and service.

Faculty Qualifications

1. A terminal degree in theatre, dance, education, or other closely related field.

2. A minimum of one year of experience teaching undergraduate courses in performance education, such as theatre for educators, classroom management/technology for performing arts specialists, performing art methodologies, and creative dramatics.

3. Minimum three years teaching experience in a PK-12 public/private school setting and appropriate state credentialing.

4. A demonstrated and ongoing commitment to equitable, inclusive, non-discriminatory pedagogy that serves diverse student populations as evidenced by the material contained in the philosophy of teaching statement and application materials.

5. Demonstrated ability to develop or create undergraduate coursework or programs, or record of relevant professional activity and research that demonstrates significant recognition for curricular design or undergraduate program development as evidenced by summary portfolio materials.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Earned doctorate or equivalent in theatre, arts education, dance, or adjacent field.

2. Demonstrated ability to form partnerships within and outside of the university, regionally, nationally, and internationally as evidenced by the summary portfolio or curriculum vitae.

3. Ability to teach specialty courses in Playwriting or Dramaturgy/textual analysis or arts-based therapy, or other secondary specialization in disciplines related to theatre and/or dance in higher education.

4. Evidence of contribution to professional organizations (e.g.: Texas University Interscholastic League, International Thespian Society, TxTA, SETC, ATHE, ACDA, etc.)

5. Working knowledge of student teacher field supervision and observation.

6. Clear ideas for impactful future research and/or creative activity goals towards professional development with clear potential to support scholarship by extramural funding, as appropriate to research specialization.

7. Experience with directing/choreographing productions at a high school or collegiate level.

8. Effective communicator in written and spoken forms as evidenced by philosophy of teaching statement and summary portfolio.
