Job Summary

Under the direction of the Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine, the Assistant Athletic Trainer provides quality care to all student athletes including prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries incurred in practice and games.

Essential Functions



  • Provides prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries for student athletes of sports as assigned. Possible assignments include men's & women's cross country and track & field. Responsible for team in both traditional and non-traditional seasons.
  • Provides assistance to other staff members with the prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries for all student athletes. Utilizes standing orders under the supervision of the team physicians in the care of student athletes.
  • Prepares and maintains comprehensive athletic injury care records and reports using current computer programs, adhering to NCAA and NATA guidelines. Ensures compliance with federal, state, and university laws, including FERPA and HIPAA. Maintains the highest level of confidentiality regarding sensitive information related to student-athletes and coaches.
  • Travels with athletic teams as assigned and provides athletic injury care coverage during practice and games.
  • Provides functional supervision to undergraduate athletic training interns from the Kinesiology Department. Performs operational duties assigned by the Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine including, but not limited to, ordering and inventory of medical supplies, staff scheduling, updating policy and procedure manual, etc. Serves on Department, School, and University committees. Attends conventions, conferences, clinics, etc., consistent with Department policy as approved by the Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine and Director of Athletics. Responsible for strict adherence to NCAA, conference, and University rules and regulations.
  • Schedules and oversees athletic clearance physical examinations process performed by physicians at the University Health Service for applicable sports programs. As part of clearance physicals, performs baseline concussion testing for each student athlete assigned. Communicates to student athletes and coaches regarding the Department's health insurance policies.



Other Functions

Performs other duties as assigned, including providing home event coverage of other sports in high demand periods of time.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)



  • Bachelor's Degree from accredited athletic training curriculum (based on Massachusetts license requirements).
  • Previous rehabilitative experience.
  • Physical ability to get to an injured student athlete on the field of play in a timely fashion.
  • Physical ability to get in a position to assess the student athlete's injury in an acute situation (i.e. squatting, kneeling, bending, ability to lift 25-50 lbs., etc.).
  • Ability to perform emergency protocols, provide appropriate hydration and monitor the safety of the environment in which the practice or game is taking place.
  • Ability to foster and maintain working relationships with various University departments.
  • Ability to improve working knowledge of athletic injury care.
  • Ability to successfully complete the administrative tasks of the position.
  • Ability to work long hours, weekends and holidays as game and practice schedules dictate.
  • Must have and maintain N.A.T.A. (National Athletic Trainers Association) certification.
  • Must have and maintain Professional Rescuer C.P.R. (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation) certification.
  • Must meet requirements to obtain and maintain a Massachusetts State license for athletic trainers.



Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)



  • Master's Degree from accredited athletic training curriculum (based on Massachusetts license requirements).
  • 1 year of intercollegiate athletic training experience.
  • Previous athletic training experience at a Division I institution.



Physical Demands/Working Conditions



  • Meets physical, health and emotional stability standards of the position.
  • Extended periods of standing.
  • Carrying, lifting, pulling, pushing, repetitive movements, bending, travel to other campuses, reaching, sitting, twisting and lifting.
  • Must be able to lift 25-50 pounds.

This position is designated as essential personnel.

Work Schedule



  • Flexible and variable hours depending on the demands of the position. Nights, weekends and holidays required.
  • Attendance at all sport assigned practice and games required.
  • This is a 43-week per year position.



Salary Information

Level 27

PSU Hiring Ranges

43 week position hiring range: $47,402.60 - $71,152.17
