Job Summary

The Industrial Hygienist serves as the technical expert for UCSF's clinical safety and industrial hygiene programs. With minimal supervision, the incumbent is expected to independently perform a wide spectrum of industrial hygiene services to include occupational exposure monitoring, indoor air quality investigations, hazard/risk assessments, local exhaust ventilation assessments, accident investigations, respirator fit testing, and others as required. The IH must be proficient in technical report writing and have the ability to explain complex topics to a wide ranging audience across the UCSF campus and Medical Center communities. Additionally, the IH is required to perform Environment of Care audits in accordance with Joint Commission accreditation requirements across UCSF Medical Center, which includes a working knowledge of fire/life safety, infection control, and emergency management principles in health care.

The IH monitors compliance and may serve as an organizational liaison with regulatory agencies. Problems faced my be complex and require creation of new methodologies by application of professional knowledge and expertise. The incumbent may be called upon to represent EH&S at meetings and conferences involving academic committees, campus functions, or UC wide working groups. Must be adept at database management, data mining, developing metrics, and meeting strict reporting requirements. Decisions may impact other EH&S programs or program elements. Function as lead Registered Environmental Health and Safety professional. Current in good standing or be able to obtain State of California Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS).

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $84,600 - $126,900 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The EH&S Department provides technical support and services for UCSF and UCSF Medical Center in the following specialties: hazardous materials management, environmental compliance, ergonomics, fire and life safety, radiation safety, chemical and biological safety, laboratory safety, and clinical and industrial hygiene program management.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in Life/Physical/Natural Sciences/Engineering/Industrial Hygiene or related area and 3-5 years relevant experience and/or equivalent experience/training
  • Thorough knowledge / understanding of specific EH&S field(s) including related laws and regulations; and general knowledge / understanding of all EH&S fields
  • Thorough knowledge and skill in applying and interpreting applicable local, state, and federal regulations and related standards and guidelines
  • Thorough written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen and skill to communicate effectively in a diverse environment
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills to organize, prioritize and manage the successful completion of projects within time and budget constraints
  • Strong skill to appropriately use technology and relevant scientific equipment as required
  • Proficiency of Cal/OSHA, EPA, SFDPH, and TJC regulatory compliance

  • Master of Science degree in Life/Physical/Natural Sciences/Engineering/Industrial Hygiene or related field
  • Experience mentoring junior staff
  • Assistant project management experience
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
  • Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP)
  • Associate (ASP) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Engineering in Training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE)
  • Registered Environmental Health and Specialist (REHS)
