Major Responsibilities:
- In conjunction with the Medical Director and Administration, formulates short and long-range department goals in accordance with the Medical Center and system objectives. Implements and monitors these goals.
- Maintains a direct line of communication with site administration, the Medical Directors of Respiratory Care, staff specialists, nursing departments and support staff as well as other hospital departments.
- Develops and enforces written policies and procedures specifying the scope and contact of patient care rendered by the department. Communicates and enforces administrative and personnel policies.
- Ensures adequate staffing and optimal patient care for assigned areas.
- Closely monitors fees charged to patients for services, to include evaluating the pricing and cost structure to ensure that they are in line with hospital and department guidelines.
- Develops, implements, and maintains a review mechanism in order to appraise the quality of care and optimum productivity of the department and hospital resources.
- Ensures the department has the proper equipment and facilities to assure the safe, effective and timely provision of services to patients. Enforces all applicable safety and health regulations.
- Performs human resources responsibilities for staff which include interviewing and selection of new employees, promotions, staff development, performance evaluations, compensation changes, resolution of employee concerns, corrective actions, terminations, and overall employee morale.
- Develops and recommends operating and capital budgets and controls expenditures within approved budget objectives.
- Responsible for understanding and adhering to the organization's Code of Ethical Conduct and for ensuring that personal actions, and the actions of employees supervised, comply with the policies, regulations and laws applicable to the organization's business.
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.
Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) issued by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC), and
- Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providerscertification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required.
Education Required:
- Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent knowledge) in Respiratory Therapy.
Experience Required:
- Typically requires 5 years of experience in respiratory therapy. Includes 1 year of supervisory experience in support operations, fiscal and human resources related activities.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
- Effective problem-solving, decision-making, delegation, and coordination skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
