Position Summary:

Responsible for specific aspects of quality inspection of ammunition components, focusing on Metal metrology measurements, i.e., Hardness, Grain Size, etc., tooling and production processes, using traditional and advanced metrology tools and techniques. Performs a wide variety of routine and non-routine inspections in the production process using pre-determined methods, including visual, dimensional, mechanical, and functional tests. Knowledge of with minimal experience in common metrology; drawing interpretation using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T); inspection planning; and measurement support for problem solving activities. Includes production support; data collection and analysis; troubleshooting and root cause analysis; and workplace organization and safety.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:



  • Primary responsibilities will include the use of specialized inspection equipment, such as profilometers, LECO hardness testers, optical comparators, vision systems and support equipment such as polishers, cutters, etc.
  • Support production via reviewing/explaining of inspection data to assure integrity of the production process and begin the investigation/resolution of discrepancies found during part inspection.
  • Using the company operating system to document product discrepancies, generate inquiries, perform movement of material, create job routings and any other function required to perform job duties.
  • When required: provide data and analysis to MRB to support resolution of issues, provide initial data to support contact of supplier (internal and external) and notification of customer (internal and external) of resolution.
  • Implementation of expedient methods of inspection in order to maintain product flow in accordance with company directives.
  • Using corrective action system and subsequent follow up process to resolve deficiencies found during job function for both Receiving and or In-process Inspection.
  • Communicate effectively to all supervision regarding problems and corrective action.
  • Seek and act upon ways to improve daily work processes to enhance quality and productivity and satisfy customer needs and expectations; look for cost reduction and service improvements; eliminate unnecessary or low priority work; initiate and encourage others to resolve impediments and act on improvement opportunities.
  • Other duties as required.


Secondary Responsibilities:



  • Perform ammunition testing to ensure compliance with all Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturing Institute (SAAMI) or ASTM standards as required by Government contracts for ammunition manufacturing following approved testing protocols for all key performance data including (but not limited to) - i.e., Mercurous Nitrate testing.
  • Properly handle disposal of Hazardous Chemical in regard to company protocols.
  • Participate on problem solving teams for driving to root cause of internal and external quality failures, particularly related to prevention of customer escapes
  • Participate in 5S Workplace organizational activities and maintain the area in good working order through sustainment activities, including requests for maintenance assistance when needed.


Education and/or Experience:



  • 0-1 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Includes proficiency with general Quality Inspection technique and/or measuring devices (eg, indicators, height gages, calipers, micrometers). Knowledge of metallurgical testing and equipment utilization, i.e., hardness testing, wet saw usage, etc. is a plus.
  • Drawing/blueprint reading, including knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing is a plus.
  • Basic knowledge of statistics, measurement systems analysis (MSA) and statistical process control, including applications.
  • Basic knowledge of structured problem solving and process improvement tools (such as fishbone diagrams, flowcharts, check sheets, histograms, control charts, Pareto charts and scatter diagrams); and plan-do-check-act (PDCA) cycles.
  • Establish and maintain a functional knowledge on the operation and maintenance of all quality inspection equipment used in the ammunition manufacturing process.
  • Rudimentary knowledge of ammunition/metal forming process for components, assemblies and product form, fit and function.
  • Basic MS Word and Excel skills.
  • Knowledge of Oracle ERP systems is a plus.


Working Conditions:



  • Regularly perform repetitive tasks.
  • Work is primarily standing (90 + % of the shift) except for lunch and break periods.
  • Shifts are 8 hours, 10 hours, and 12 hours.
  • The duties of this job normally require exposure to a typical manufacturing environment. Frequent standing, sitting, stooping/squatting, walking, and stair climbing can be expected along with frequent lifting and/or moving of tooling, parts containers, and materials up to 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to reach with hands and arms, bend and kneel frequently at a minimum of 50% of the shift, as well as undergo repetitive wrist, hand, elbow, shoulder, and ankle motions.
  • Must demonstrate proficient fine motor skills, ability to grip, reach, pull, turn, and use tools to torque fixtures in various machinery or in the assembly, machining, or testing of parts.
  • Specific vision abilities required may include close vision, distance vision, peripheral and depth perception, and the ability to focus on fine print.
  • Must wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) where required.
  • Must comply with all work exposure EH&S training requirements and adhere to SIG SAUER Inc. security mandates.
