Position Summary

The HSC Office for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (OfDEI) at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center is seeking an experienced, dynamic, self-motivated individual to serve as a Program Specialist for our series of statewide Communities to Careers initiatives which aim to grow New Mexico's diverse health care workforce. The Program Specialist will work with the OfDEI staff and partners to plan and implement program initiatives for the Communities to Careers educational pathway programs to further our mission of growing NM's diverse health care workforce.

Since 1973, the HSC Office for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (OfDEI) and partners have developed and implemented a series of highly integrated K-20 programs across NM which prepare underrepresented and under resourced youth for academic success and readiness to enter and graduate from health professions programs. These long-standing programs have established and strengthened the UNM HSC's impact on the diversity of New Mexico's health professions workforce to represent the rich diversity of the states' population and to build a cadre of health professionals ready to address NM's social determinants of health and health inequities.

The Communities to Careers Program Specialist will generate program content, resources and partnerships for the OfDEI Communities to Careers student programs and activities to support positive outcomes for the participants. This position requires experience with program planning, development, implementation and leadership within educational and/or health care environments. The Program Specialist will represent the Communities to Careers leadership team within and outside the University with community-based partners, and prepare and share program summary reports with internal and external constituents.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Plans and coordinates the development, implementation, and execution of programs, special projects, and other initiatives designed to achieve the overall mission, goals and objectives of Communities to Careers.
  2. Oversees and administers all facets of the day-to-day operations of a series of programs within OfDEI relating to Communities to Careers programs and all related activities.
  3. Serves as the liaison with internal and external stakeholders on all matters related to Communities to Careers program activities; represents UNM with respect to program activities on a local, regional, statewide, and/or national level.
  4. Assists with the development and implementation of strategies for identifying and generating funding and/or resource opportunities for program activities, to include development of grant and other fundraising proposals.
  5. Provides and coordinates the provision of technical guidance, consultation related to clientele within the area of program focus with community, statewide and internal partners.
  6. Creates, produces, and delivers a wide range of promotional, educational, and informational presentations, classes/workshops, and/or resource materials related to the program activities and initiatives.
  7. Oversees and coordinates the collection, compilation and basic analysis of program activity information and data, and assist with the development, writing, and presentation of comprehensive narrative program reports.
  8. Advises on operating goals and objectives for the Communities to Careers programs; identifies opportunities to enhance program operations in order to achieve greater efficiencies and effectiveness and to fulfill program objectives outlined within the contract/grant.
  9. May supervise and/or lead staff and/or student employees, as assigned.
  10. May participate in special projects and other related initiatives designed to achieve the overall mission, goals, and objectives of the HSC Office for Diversity's pipeline programs.
  11. Performs miscellaneous job related duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 6 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Experience conducting all phases of the program planning and execution process (e.g., developing program goals and objectives, curriculum development, enrollment and recruitment of participants, student advisement, program assessment, and reporting).
  • Experience with educational and career pipeline/pathway programs.
  • Experience in communicating complex information effectively (written/verbal form) to a variety of audiences, including university and external constituents.
  • Experience overseeing multiple, complex tasks and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in delivering presentations in professional and educational settings.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with individuals at multiple levels, in diverse roles, and with diverse perspectives.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Experience with grant-related programs and projects.
  • Experience managing program budgets.
  • Ability to communicate in languages commonly spoken in New Mexico.
