Purpose of Position

The Real Estate Office is a department in the Division of Business Affairs. We are a full-service real estate department composed of business officers, supported by specialists and administrative staff. We provide business support regarding real property matters to our academic and health institutions, as well as directly oversee certain real property matters on their behalf. The selected candidate will report to the Assistant Director of Real Estate and acquire, sell, lease, develop and manage real estate assets and assist institutions with campus real estate transactions that are critical to the mission of the UT System. The Real Estate Office provides business advice on transactions including purchases, sales, space leases to and from third parties, and ground leases.

Essential Functions

  • Analyzes, negotiates, and advises campuses on leases of space as lessor and/or lessee.
  • Negotiates the sale, acquisition, and lease of endowment, trust, and campus real estate assets.
  • Assists and advises university campus real estate offices regarding sophisticated real property transactions.
  • Coordinates the closing requirements of complex sale, purchase, easement, and lease transactions.
  • Performs real estate financial and valuation analysis.
  • Reviews and processes proposed gifts of real estate.
  • Coordinates due diligence efforts in connection with real estate acquisitions.
  • Consults with appropriate university officials and provides routine updates regarding campus real property assets and real property assets held in trust for their respective institutions.
  • Works collaboratively with the Office of General Counsel, Office of Risk Management, and other departments as necessary, on assigned transactions.
  • Prepares assigned real estate Board items for Board meetings.
  • Reviews and processes lease abstracts, files, and closing binders.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and collaborate with a team.
Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and at least six (6) years applicable experience.

Applicable experience includes work in the following areas: brokerage, real estate consulting, appraisal, real estate development, real estate investment, sales, acquisitions, commercial space leasing, or ground leasing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in specific area of study, including business, real estate, or related field.
  • Substantial experience in negotiating commercial leases.
  • Experience negotiating ground leases.
  • Knowledge or experience working with university or state agency real estate operations.
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.

Additional Information

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to a minimum of 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

A background check will be conducted on candidates under final consideration. The background check may include any or all of the following: criminal history check, prior employment verification, education verification, professional references check, and motor vehicle records check. Background checks are conducted by third-party vendors. Upon request form the third-party vendor, candidates under final consideration must provide the required information for the background checks to be completed.
