Job Summary

* Studies blueprints, sketches, drawing, manuals, specification, or sample part to measure dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, follows instructions of setup sheet, and sets machine to the requirements.

* Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mill, lathe, grinders, and shapers in accordance with setup requirements.

* Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.

* Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.

* Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.

* Verifies conformance of finished work piece to specifications.

* Records quality data on process output and controls process to maintain process control within requirements.

* Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly.

* Runs more than one machine when possible.

* Disposes of chips and maintains coolant cleanliness for longer coolant life.

* Performs regular maintenance and cleaning of machines and work areas as detailed on area 5S worksheet and records completion of tasks as appropriate.

* Offers feedback and suggestions for process improvements to engineers and programmers.

* Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.

Required Experience and Education

  • H.S. Diploma or GED
  • Must be able to read and understand blue prints and use measurement devices
