Position description

Davis Lab - Electrophysiologist - Assistant/Associate/Full Specialist

Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics

UC San Francisco

The Davis Lab in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics are seeking applications for Assistant/Associate/Full Specialist position. We seek to hire an individual to work with a team of specialists, postdocs and graduate students seeking to define cellular and molecular mechanisms of neuronal resilience in the mammalian brain. In particular, this individual will explore how mechanisms of neuronal resilience intersect with and modify mechanisms of neurodegenerative and psychiatric disease. This individual will primarily perform experiments using patch clamp electrophysiology in acute mammalian brain slice (mouse). This individual may be asked to engage in stereotaxic surgery to deliver molecular reagents to specific anatomical sites in the mouse brain as well as participate in basic mouse breeding and husbandry in concert with full-time mouse husbandry staff. Experimental direction will be determined according to the goals of a larger research team. This is a full-time position, but there is start-date flexibility for the right candidate. It is our intention that this individual will contribute meaningfully to the publication of primary research as an author.

Required Qualifications:

  • Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess a master's degree (or equivalent degree) or a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) with three or more years of research experience.
  • Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess a master's degree (or equivalent degree) or five to ten years of experience in the relevant specialization.
  • Specialists appointed at the Full rank must possess a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or ten or more years of experience in the relevant specialization.
  • At least four years' experience with slice preparation, patch clamp electrophysiology, data acquisition, data analysis and archiving are necessary.
  • Must be able to design and execute daily experiments autonomously, requiring extensive experience with neuronal pharmacology in mammalian brain slice preparations.
  • Experienced with basic epifluorescence and confocal microscopy for quantitative living imaging.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with programming and be able to adapt recent AI-based tools and/or machine learning tools for the analysis of large data sets.
  • Familiarity with data-based management and curation of large data sets is also considered a plus.
  • Familiarity with the generation of scientific figures is also considered a plus.

See Table 24B for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $61,300-$188,200.
