Position Purpose
The Executive Director serves as a key leader and spokesperson for the Arthur L. Irving Institute for Energy and Society ( IIES) at Dartmouth. The Executive Director reports to the Institute's Faculty Director. The Faculty Director and Executive Director will work in partnership on behalf of the Institute and Dartmouth College to advance understanding of the world's energy challenges and accelerate the transition to a low- and no-carbon energy system. The Executive Director will serve as a catalyst to organize and synergize research initiatives, academic programs, collaborations among faculty, and outreach to the world of energy and society.

  • Demonstrated successful leadership, administrative experience, and budgetary management skills.
  • Knowledge of current and future developments in the field of energy and society.
  • Ability and experience to engage external corporate partners, governmental agencies, non-profits, and individuals to support the Institute through mutually beneficial collaborations and fundraising.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively as a leadership team member and leader, with a proven track record in team building, mentoring, and development.
  • Highest level of ethics and integrity.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and promote a diverse environment.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills and the ability to inspire and work collaboratively with staff, faculty, and academic leaders across the institution and beyond.
  • Outstanding skills and passion for external development and fundraising.
  • Experience with and commitment to education, research, training, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Experience in translating strategic plans into programmatic goals, activities, and achievements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Significant energy industry/government agency leadership experience.
  • Current or previous leadership at a higher education institution.

Planning and Implementation -

  • Partners with the Faculty Director and other stakeholders to develop a collective, collaborative vision and approach for Dartmouth to pursue the mission of the Institute.
  • Ensures the overall fiscal health and operational sustainability of IIES.
  • Consults with faculty on future trajectory of IIES.
  • Oversees management of IIES staff and contractors.
  • Oversees the animation of the Irving Institute building.
  • Coordinates meetings of the Board of Advisors, Faculty Affiliates, and other stakeholder groups.

Engagement of Schools and Faculty Scholars -

  • Partners with the Faculty Director in ensuring that IIES plays an integral role in Dartmouth's commitment to combining outstanding undergraduate liberal arts and graduate education with distinguished research and scholarship in the Arts & Sciences and its graduate and professional schools - the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies, the Geisel School of Medicine, the Thayer School of Engineering, and the Tuck School of Business.
  • Works to affirm continued student engagement in the Institute through groups like the Dartmouth Energy Collaborative, Energy Immersion Trips, and the Dartmouth Energy Alliance student club.

Description
External Engagement and Philanthropic Development -

  • Serves as an advocate to champion and bring recognition to the Institute's mission and accomplishments regionally, nationally, and internationally.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with various partners to develop research opportunities and new initiatives, to enhance and diversify revenue streams, to translate research into practice, and to support economic growth and workforce development in the state and beyond.
  • Works with the Institute's Faculty Director and affiliated faculty in securing extramural research funding from government agencies, foundations, and commercial partners.
  • Works with development staff to spearhead advancement and fundraising activities with alumni and individual donors.
