Division and Unit Overview

The mission of the ACS Green Chemistry Institute catalyzes green chemistry and engineering to promote sustainability, prosperity, and equity across the global chemical enterprise. The Institute focuses efforts in three key areas: education, business/industry, science/innovation and equity. The aim is to become the green and sustainable chemistry and engineering nexus for the global chemistry enterprise. The Institute is part of the American Chemical Society's Scientific Advancement Division.

Position Summary

The position reports to the Senior Portfolio Manager of Scientific Alliance and Business Engagement of the ACS Green Chemistry Institute. The Program Specialist is responsible for supporting day-to-day engagement with the ACS GCI Industry Roundtables, focused on catalyzing implementation of green and sustainable chemistry and engineering initiatives in industry related to advance science, create tools, educate leaders, and influence future leaders globally. The Program Specialist will support the ACS GCI roundtable programs through meaningful and solutions-oriented interactions with internal and external stakeholders. Solutions may include collaborations with other GCI teams and Scientific Advancement Division members, other ACS-related groups and other external stakeholders. The new team member will also support administrative, financial, and technical areas of convening industry roundtable members as well as interactions with focus teams.

Position Responsibilities

The new team member will support ACS GCI Industry Roundtables day-to-day initiatives, coordinate interactions and meeting agendas and schedules. They will also organize and coordinate meetings that meaningfully fosters collaboration and engagement, as well as provide scientific input into roundtable focus teams' technical projects.

Examples of supporting activities:



  • Industry focus teams meetings

    • Schedule meetings, prepare agendas
    • Maintain updated lists through constant communication with GCIPR Manager, Member Companies POC, or focus team co-leads.


  • Compose and disseminate meeting minutes, and manage projects
  • Manage member company dues
  • Helps to write scientific publications and revise manuscripts
  • Manage communications related to Members engagement.
  • Coordinate ACS GCI Industry Programs at the ACS National Meetings and GC&E and other relevant venues.
  • Finance administration and tracking support
  • Grants and Awards programs administration
  • Survey creation and responses collection.
  • Website updates coordination
  • ACS Campaign for a Sustainable Future

    • Works with the ACS GCI Scientific Alliance and Business & Engagement Senior Portfolio Manager of the to organize initiatives related to the industry programs that can impact development goals.




Work Design: The candidate would be joining a small, mission-driven team within a large organization. A self-starter with the ability to quickly absorb information and collaboratively drive each project to the next step is required. Excellent organizational ability combined with flexibility and adaptability in handling rapidly changing priorities is essential. Experience working collaboratively in and with teams to accomplish the short- and long-term mission of the Institute and the ACS is preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills and a technology-savvy approach are required. Required proficiency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint and SciFinder science-based databases. Willingness to learn new software platforms utilized by both internal and external stakeholders.

This role is based in our Washington, DC office. A reasonable rate of compensation for this position is between $69,000 to $94,000 per year.

Any actual offer of employment, reflecting the total compensation package and benefits, will be made in the sole discretion of ACS. ACS reserves the right to amend or modify its employment benefits and compensation structure at any time.
